The pundits were creaming themselves over Rooney's goal last night, declaring it goal of the season. Fantastic technique to hit through the ball like that, rather than go for the lob, but feel they have gone over the top. Yes, it was a great goal but it was a single piece of skill rather than a combination of say great control, beating players then finishing well (like Boufal's goal for Southampton vs West Brom). |Also felt the hapless Jo Hart helped with a clumsy clearance which left the goal open (unlike Durrell's effort at Borehamwood last season when the keeper was still in situ but off his line). My favourite goal remains the one in the World Cup final in 1970, when a series of passes culminated with a shot into the bottom corner.

Depends on what your take of a great goal is. For some it's a piece of individual skill that stands out, for others it's a great piece of team work.
It's all a matter of opinion.

Although the likes of Rooney, Alonso, Beckham etc were great goals, I prefer a rasper from 35 yards into the top corner. To me, it's more satisfying beating a goalie stood in the middle of his posts rather than gone AWOL.

See Ryan Lloyd scored a similar (but better imo) goal for Macclesfield at the weekend.

Any goal from the halfway line is impressive, but given the hype over it, I was a bit disappointed when I saw it. Hart made a mess of the clearance so there wasn't really a keeper to beat. Excellent strike but not goal of the season stuff, I don't think.
Daniels for Bournemouth v Man City was better I thought.

I loved Esteban Cambiasso's goal against Serbia&Montenegro in 2006 - in fact it shouldn't be given to him alone.

The great Gordon Banks has spoken frankly today from Russia about Joe Hart and reckons he's had it. I think his treatment by Guardiola has not helped, but a once great GK seems full of mistakes these days.

Hart is a tool. How he’s still number one for England is beyond belief. Forster, pickford and buttland should be ahead of him. In fact I heard West Ham fans on talksport questioning how he’s ahead of Adrian as their first choice.

England's three 'keepers - Hart, Pickford and Butland - have conceded more goals than any of the other first choice stoppers in the PL so far this season. They're the worst three! Desperately need Tom Heaton back but his stand-in Pope has carried on Heaton's form at Turf Moor, call both of them up.

I loved Esteban Cambiasso's goal against Serbia&Montenegro in 2006 - in fact it shouldn't be given to him alone. That's the problem with "team goals". I remember there was one in La Liga about 15 years ago, scored by Real Zaragoza I think, that was just the best worked free kick ever - a four or five man passing move that left the other team all just stood around looking at each other - but to give the award to the player who scored it seemed wrong because it was a simple tap-in for him. I like goals that are a bit different to what you normally see. 30-yarders can be appreciated but are much of a muchness. Bergkamp v Newcastle for example was something I've never seen a player do before. I also liked Kanu's v Chelsea in the 90s where he took it round the keeper and bent it in from a right angle, plus it was a last minute winner and completed his hat-trick, which made it seem especially impressive. I think my all-time favourite Chester goal is Howard's v Stalybridge a few years ago, mainly because he played so many roles in the goal, from winning the ball, to starting the attack, to finishing it in style.

That sort of effort takes 1 off timing and hand foot co-ordinationl Very difficult to hit a moving ball that sweetly so it was a good goal. Better than the 'amazing' overhead kick he score which, if you watch it carefully. is shanked off his shin.
