20 years ago I was one of 864 who watched Chester lose 2-1 at Doncaster. Not just any old defeat - that was Doncaster’s first win of the season! Absolutely freezing at Belle Vue. I missed the first half (1-1) but was there to watch Wayne Brown throw the ball against Spencer Whelan’s buttocks in the 82nd minute and for Donny’s striker to go on and stroke the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-1! Cue pitch invasion. If I remember correctly we were about 7th at the time. Three days later things would get even worse live on Sky...

Remember the games well. As you say it was a freezing night in Yorkshire. A section of the pitch was frozen all along one touch line. There was quite a few police horses in attendance considering the sparse crowd. Awful Night generally and a dreadful display from our players at the time.

You are right - it was an abject display that evening (not too different to what we are seeing this season).
Did you manage to get a programme from the match? I seem to remember it was wafer thin, black and white, and cost £1!

Their chairman at the time (Richardson iirc) eventually when to prison when he was implicated in attempted arson of their main stand.

Coincidentally, Dave Powell had tweeted that 12 years ago today we beat Notts Forest 3-0 in the FA cup. That's when we had a great half season under Curle, only for it to go tits up after Christmas. A case of what might have been.

Studying at Nottingham Trent at the time so only a short trip up the M1. It was freezing. I think we had Jonathon Jones up front for us who missed a couple of 1 on 1's.
The same season I think we beat them 6-0 at home?

I think we beat them 2-1 at home which actually relegated them down to the conference. This was my first season watching the blues.

Andy Milner scored 4 in that match I think.

It summed up life supporting Chester that we should win at Notts County who finished as runaway champions that season a month before losing at Donny who were absolutely dreadful and had yet to win.

Andy Milner scored 4 in that match I think. We beat Doncaster 6-0 in the 96/97 season. Milner got 4, Iain Jenkins had a great chance to score his first goal for the Blues from the penalty spot but fluffed it. Was saved by an outfield player after their goalie got sent off in the incident which led to the penalty. Remember it very well.

I remember the 2-1 win at home in 97/98 very well. They went one up (Adie Mike, ex-Man City I think) but we went on to win.
I remember there was a haunting feeling round the ground as they were clearly in a lot of trouble off the pitch, and there were growing concerns about our position as well (anyone remember the Swansea home game that season, re-arranged urgently to raise money? Only about 1,500 turned up because no one knew about it!)

I remember two young lads played at full back, Martin Giles and Ryan Dobson both looked really promising but didn't quite make the grade. They had some stiff competition for those places though with Iain Jenkins and Ross Davidson both quality players for us back in the 90's.

I bloody miss the Football League days.

He’d only played for us a handful of games, went to Everton, got injured and retired at 21.
