Does anyone else think it would be a good bit of business to offer the big man an extended contract now rather than wait for someone to tap him up before the end of the season, that way if he does move on we will get a transfer fee. It’s a no brainier for me as he is our most consistent performer by a county mile.

Laughable that we didn't when the likes of Chappel, Davies etc got the same deal as Astles. However, silly decisions were Macca's forte! I would give him a five year deal and make him captain. He's already a cult hero and fastly on his way to becoming a legend at the club.

The guy has taken his new contract and eat it. He's put on considerable weight into this season, things bouncing round you normally see on women! He's does give 100% but other than that I don't see the much else. I didn't even see poor fitness like that in the Evo-Stik.

I like the player, but it's risky to offer long contracts. After all, most people (myself included) were happy when Macca was offered a two year contract and look what happened there!

If he's underperforming I'd get it but he's still been one of the better players this season. I'd wager that he does more running than most and covers more ground (don't be a smart arse!). Nearly always first to every header, never shirks a tackle and amazingly hasn't received a single yellow so far this season despite his 'no nonsense' style. We'd be in a lot worse position without him. The lad is still only 23, cut him some slack. It's not even a question of fitness, the lad clearly is fit enough, it's not like he's gasping for air every 5 minutes, it is a physical thing and imo it doesn't affect his performance on the pitch.

Among the current squad Astles is the only one I'd be sorry to lose.

Hadn't realised that. That makes him even more impressive to me. The way he nurtured young James on Saturday is also part of his game. I for one wouldn't be very impressed if someone like Tranmere Rovers took him for nothing at the end of the season. I realise that he's young enough to get a fee, but that hasn't worked out very well with Alabi has it?

Its not like anybody tried to stop the board from damaging the club or anything...

Was one of our better players last year and same this year. Yes he's over weight but his fitness is fine...always last the full match and played almost every game last year and this year

He’s quality, gives 110% every game, wins everything in the air, scores goals & is without doubt a far better candidate for the captaincy than McCombe.
Could he do with losing a bit of weight? Yeah probably but he’s been our most consistent & impressive performer this season. I’d have no issues with him being tied down for an extra year.

Ryan Astles is a gold plated agricultural robot parked front and centre of our defence.... forget the moobs and ample buttocks ... Astles has a hopper at one end into which MB unloads tons and tons of freshly picked potatos (king Edwards, Maris pipers, jersey royals) ... these are crushed and processed through Ryan's jaws, regurgitated through a mincing machine, digested in a vat of acid, pressed through a mangle before being delivered into Ryan's mechanical arms and legs in the form of fairy dust. Ryan's spreads that fairy dust in vast clouds all over the Deva pitch.... and for that reason Ryan should have his contract extended
plus I have it from very reliable source from very very deep inside the club that he is training to become he a Seal legend. In his spare time when he isn't eating extra potato's, he balances a ball on the end of his nose for minutes on end .... just like what Barry Butler used to do....

Personally, I don’t think that Ryan Astles isn’t bad for a ‘’fat slob who can fill the goal’’.

By far the most committed player we have. Never shirks a challenge. And is spotted in Total Fitness in Prenton most days.

Must admit his weight irritates me (probably more than it should!). You can't fault his performance levels but it frustrates me thinking how good he could be if he showed the discipline off the pitch to keep himself in shape.

If you could combine Astles with Nyal Bell's physique, you'd have a Championship player.
I've never met him, but I wonder whether he realises just how good he could be?

The state of this thread 😩 The lad gets through a 90 min game with ease, so what if he's carrying a bit of weight.

Don't get me wrong - he's one of our best players and I'm sure could be a National League player for the rest of his career with ease. I do think, however, that his career could take off if he lost a little weight.

At the start of season presentation to CFU by JMc he had slides showing some of the training stats. One of those briefly put up related to the Body Fat levels of the players.
It was only flashed up for a few seconds, but interestingly, Astles wasn't the highest. He was the first I looked for, for obvious reasons. Didn't get chance to see them all, but one other player certainly had higher Body Fat readings. Maybe others did too, but JMc took the slide down too quickly.

Astles is a cracking player at our level, but is certainly hindered from going any higher because of his weight. I'm not saying he'd suddenly gain a shed load of pace if he lost weight, he's always going to be slow, but its more the concentration side of things. If you're carrying around extra weight for 90 mins then your body might be able to cope but your mind is another thing, and when you've had to work harder than others to get through the game its going to affect you in the later stages of games when you need to get back in position or pick up your marker.

He is what he is and we should just celebrate we've got a decent AND fearless defender because our situation without him doesn't bear thinking about.
