Any one who has read my posts before will know that I was a supporter of Graham Barrow getting the Managers job (Director of Football actually) when it was last recruited for. I make no apologies for that, I was incredulous at the time that he was considered not as strong a candidate as Bignot and remain so.
I now feel feel stronger than ever, in spite of some of the harsh comments on here, that he is our only chance of salvaging anything this season for the following reasons;
1) He would cost the club next to nothing, his salary would be paid by the 50 plus, hopefully more! fans that would return to support us. Maybe, with a strong wind behind him and a couple of encouraging performances/results we may even get close to the break even gates, the 2000 figure. I don’t think there’s another manager out there who could attract enough fans back to the Deva to pay their own wages?
2) He knows the Conference through his work with Fylde, look at their results since he joined them in November.
3) He can sign professional footballers, through his contacts for very little if not “nothing”. Chettle and Stubbs have signed for Fylde for experience, their parent clubs are paying their wages apparently
4) Because of his reputation and standing in North West football players will be prepared to come here and their managers would support them coming here to work with a proven Manager and coach , everyone from Everton to Oldham, Blackpool to Crewe and all clubs in between know Graham Barrow and what he has achieved in the game. 3 or 4 quality players would make a world of difference to any team. They are available and Graham Barrow is our best chance of attracting them here . Loads of players are out of contract in a few months and need to be playing either for a move or another contract, Graham is in an excellent position to know who they are and attract them, again AT NO COST TO THE CLUB
5) On local BBC radio he has stated he would prefer to be back on the training pitch, coaching and managing players.
6)I imagine he would work on a contract until the end of the season, he has a passion for Chester FC and had his best playing Memories and some of his best managing memories here, he may even consider a monthly contract, it would give him what he wants, a coaching and managing job and raise his profile again.
7) If he we’re given a title such as “Consultant” or similar then that would protect his reputation if it all goes belly up, although I don’t think he’d worry too much about that.
8) He would give us some pride back, the team would be organised, hard working and understand what playing for Chester FC means, he would make sure of that - bottom line.
9) As others have said, this year the Conference does not have a dominant team or teams, the top of the league lost 6-0 on Saturday, with organisation, effort and a little confidence there are still enough points to keep us up. Points are available but they are running out, the sooner the better we make some kind of a move.
10) Where the volunteers/organisation of the club is a concern he could also advise on what he thinks is effective.
We have to pay the present manager his salary until the end of the season, place him on Gardening Leave, wed save on travelling expenses, (I nearly said bonuses then!) and should he get another job in the meantime we be free of him.
Im sure some will be falling asleep by now,apologies, but what have we got to lose? I think with this little plan which should be cost effective at least and may even improve our finances we need to at least talk to the man before another club comes in for him. It would provide some hope at least.
Heaven help us going to the Racecourse on 10th March if nothing has altered on the pitch between now and then.............
Mind you he might, having been overlooked already distance himself from the job, but surely worth a punt?
What other better solutions are there? We need a plan not just the criticism. I think the majority agree that something needs to be done, I think this is the least radical option. If this were tried and falls flat I would at least be thankful that we tried something
We need to try and stay in this League, if we are relegated I think it will be years before we could get promoted the Conference North has become a very tough league and as a Community Club surely the higher up the pyramid we are playing, the easier it is for the Community side to develop and be supported?
