Most of the problem lies with the stupidity of the bet. Once The keeper knew about the bet he was in a no win situation. If he decided to eat a pie he was aiding the punters, if he refrained he was aiding the bookie. As long as he didn't disclose his intentions before hand, no one had an unfair advantage and I don't think he would be found to have done anything illegal. If, however, he told people that he was going to eat a pie before betting had closed then there is a problem. So I suppose it boils down to whether it was just attention seeking or whether he did it so he or his mates could make money unfairly. If it was the former I think he was treated harshly, if it was the latter the club had little option but to sack him.
