Wouldn't surprise me, if The Scum also setup the cringeworthy pie eating stunt, with the reserve goalie

Apart from anything else, what did their regular sponsors make of them wearing a different one for a game on national TV against Premier League opposition?

I thought it was pretty obvious that it was a stunt. I suspected as much when it showed him sweeping the dugout. Then he was in the bar at half time before the pie incident.
Pity, as it's a genuinely nice story that someone of his bulk can play football at a decent level without the need to make him become a parody of himself.

Goes to show that nobody should be touching the Sun with a barge pole. This and the pie incident, which it seems Sun Bets were behind, has caused them grief on a day when they didn't need any novelty publicity.
It must be tempting to take the money, but they'd have come out of it better if they hadn't. For the biggest newspaper in the country to be snubbed by a 'proper non-league club' (as their manager keeps tediously reminding everyone) would've been great publicity. I certainly hope we'd do the same in their position, being close to Liverpool I'm sure it would gain us a lot of admirers, aside from being morally right from a club like ours.

Not really fussed about the Liverpool stuff, we're Chester. It's more the whole Murdoch, right-wing stuff. I'd love someone like the Morning Star to do it for us if the opportunity every arose, especially as we are a cooperatively-owned community club.

I care about a national newspaper making shit up about dead people, whoever they support.

Haha, true. I just think it's interesting hypothetically to think about what we'd do in their position. I bet some of us would go ape, and others would be saying we should bite their hands off!

Couldn't decide whether to go to Sutton at the end of the season, but reading this has saved me the bother of thinking too hard about it.
For someone to say they don't care about Liverpool stuff is really missing the point.
I'm so grateful for people of integrity like Colin Murray who spewed his well-paid job at TalkSport when the S*n bought it.

I'm also surprised that a club who heavily relies on volunteers accepted the sponsorship of the Sun, when there are local businesses who would like to promote themselves in front of a large audience.

Money talks Like to think as a fan owned club, if we were in this situation we'd show some loyalty to the sponsors who were there for us from the start of the season, especially if it were a local firm.

Easy to say that now until there's wads of cash thrown in front of our faces. Of course, our principles as a fan-owned community club should stand tall above everything else.
Just to clarify my comments earlier in this thread, of course I care about what the newspaper had written about Hillsborough but I was angling at the general tone and stance of the paper as a whole bothers me greatly. Didn't explain it properly.

Its a difficult one. Who knows when Sutton will ever get this far or get this coverage again? could be decades which makes it arguable to get as much money from this as possible as it can set them up for years to come.

The S*n is an appalling rag of a paper. I actually find it hard to believe there are people out there think enough to buy it, let along read that rubbish. Got this article from a link on another site but makes the point well and is worth a read. www.joe.co.uk/sport/the-magic-of-the-cup-is-paying-a-man-to-eat-pie-on-television-for-money/114058 I actually was pleased for Sutton as a non-league club until they did the Sun thing and then that stupidity with the pie. No sympathy at all now and I'm glad Arsenal got rid of them. Hopefully Lincoln can show more class when they inevitably get approached for the next round.

As the old saying goes "Lie with Dogs and you get fleas". Sutton United should've realized when you get involved with a trashy paper like The Sun only bad will come of it. I have no sympathy for them as they have made the Conference a bit of a laughing stock now with their antics and their manager comes across as a total prat.
Also with their cup run money hopefully they can buy a proper pitch because that thing they play on is a disgrace.
If by some minor miracle we have a cup run I hope we keep it classy and get a sponsor like "National Geographic" or "Le Monde" and not some gutter rag like The Sun.

Says the person with a right-wing avatar. The reason Pepe is crying is because he is sad at being hijacked by the right-wing fascists. As for AB's post above, I would hope we would honour our existing sponsors if such an event arose. Surely with the continued support of a company like MBNA, or any local company for that matter such as Sutton's, they deserve the limelight and airtime of a massive televised FA Cup game against a Premier League giant.

Agreed. My comment about any new potential sponsors was made tongue in cheek. A company like Swetenhams Chemist would deserve the limelight and not some crass paper like "The Sun".

More rubbish spouted about how much was won,the only prices quoted were from sunsets and anybody who has even a small understanding of the betting industry will know that these days it is almost impossible to get £200 on a 8/1 shot in a horse race outside of the main festivals let alone on someone eating a pie.The first person to ring up and ask for a bet of even a £100 will have been told they could have £59 at most at that price and the rest about even money any subsequent bets would a lt less than 8/1 .if they laid more than 5 bets in total I would be amazed and I bet there total liability would be less than a grand in total .Their marketing team all need pay rises for getting national coverage with such a small liability

Agreed Particularly agree with his comments regarding the patronising attitude of the pundits and commentators on the BBC The "plucky little part-timers" thing is just about OK but it the general tone implying that there's no talent at lower levels that annoyed me
