A heart rending account by Drewe Broughton on Chronicle website - it does bring home the fact that players are human beings and are not unaffected by the abuse they receive.

Great read, really honest. Glad he's on the up after a terrible few years. I thought he wasn't a bad player in the time he was here but clearly had other issues which limited him also.

Plenty of players who are gifted are also flawed. A shining examples being George Best and Gazza. Gary Roberts is another example, should be playing much higher than this but demons are dragging him down. Richard Brodie is another player who should be playing at a higher level but HIS demons cause real problems for him. Many of you hate Richard because of his behaviour etc, but as with Gary he is a decent lad who struggles with addictions of one kind or another

But you're right, so many players have these demons just like the fans, board members, kiosk staff - giving them constant shit must be draining.

Perhaps spectators should recognize that players are human with feelings and not robots. I found Drews quote "Chester were paying well at the time and we had some good players like Roberto Martinez and Jon Walters" interesting. This must have been when SV was flush

It's an excellent article. We're lucky to get material as good as this in a local paper. I know we get the odd trite piece about a player insisting we're "turned the corner" but credit to Dave Powell, there have been some really interesting stories rooted out in recent years.
Goes to show there can be a lot more going on with a player than what you see on the pitch.

Really interesting article. Seems like he has turned his life around and get the impression he is working as a sports psychologist. Seriously wonder if he would spend a few hours with the squad to help us out.

Frustration can get to us all on match days but just goes to show that sometimes there is more going on than what meets the eye. Standing on the terrace screaming abuse at lads just doesn’t sit right with me. When Rooney was here he got hammered every single game from that strange lad on the terrace......it takes a strong character to be able to cope with vitriol like that.

You got the feeling today that the fans are so keen for Gary to do well which will drive him on. He’s definitely got it and if he helps keep us up it will be something for him to be proud of. I think he will become a player we will be proud of. After reading the Broughton article the only two people I have sympathy for is his first wife and child/children. Openly admitting to going with prostitutes whilst his family is supporting him is the absolute pits. Hope his first wife and kids are happy and doing well in their lives.
