I think we'll be seeing more of Lucas Dawson, Ex-Stoke City and mates with Heneghan and Alabi. Again, the type of player we want to be picking up, improving over a season or two and selling on.

It's great that Chappell, Killock, O'Brien etc. are gaining minutes, but they weren't even in the matchday squad on Saturday.

The invisible Man Marsh played today , is he that bad he can't get on subs bench for first team ? Must have some ability to have been at Liverpool . With a tight budget he was a very strange signing ?

With a tight budget he was a very strange signing ? Stephen Vaughan Jnr was once on the books at Liverpool, so I'm not sure its much of a sign of ability! I've only seen Marsh once in the Cheshire Cup and he looked badly off the pace - and that was playing in what was effectively our youth team.

I can remember Macca saying that he was aware that fans were calling for Sam Hughes to play at the start of the season but he gave good reasons why he wasn't being picked at that time and when he did get his chance he kept it. There is much more to what we as fans can actually see and know about why players are not available and I think we should (by now) trust Jon's judgement.

Apparently Vassell picked up a knock
Pointless friendly and now potentially have our RB out of a big game on Friday
More trialists that we can't afford to sign on also

Gives them some semi competitive football and puts them in the shop window and our fringe players get a game without risking first teamers

There is much more to what we as fans can actually see and know about why players are not available and I think we should (by now) trust Jon's judgement. Sam Hughes proved himself in the second half of last season, yet Macca left him out for the first 8 games this season in which we picked up 7 points. He came in at CH and we conceded 1 goal in 9 matches and were unbeaten. Saturday was his first game at CH half since Aldershot (a) in October. We've concede an average of 2 and a half goals a game when Sam hasn't partnered Astles. If Macca has a hidden reason for this I'm afraid it's bizzare. He's admitted he's made mistakes and the exclusion of SH at CH is the most obvious.

Macca has already said he's planning for next season so keeping the trialists on board with a view to summer signings.
One very slight concern (dont panic) is we've been beaten in all these friendlies and strikingly, AFC Fylde coming up next season looks ominous if their fringe players vs our fringe is anything to go by.
Marsh - well, if he's not pushing the first team i dont see the point but Macca must see something in him.

It was Macca and Sharps who nurtured him into a centre half this season and maybe didn't think he was quite ready from the off? He's a must start at centre half for the rest of the season, especially with Killock back to cove right back if Vassell is injured.

Macca is careful and methodical. Yes this makes him slightly risk-averse, which is why Iwelumo would be a good Assistant if he could make matchdays.
It's the same with O'Brien, he's not Burr so wont just throw a loanee in. he'll make him train with the squad, look to blend him in before sending him out there.

Isn't this more about having a proper look at players for next season? Make perfect sense to me. Waters is one who isn't quite ready yet but could be a decent player if he's eased in gently and builds up a bit more strength.

Everyone makes mistakes, the problem is that when you manage a football club you have certain fans that like to point out all the things that didn't go to plan. It's a fact that everyone likes a little moan now and again it's what makes us human but some people only post on here to nit pick , Vessall has just come back and needs some game time to get match fit he could have picked up a knock in training just as easily , let's just look forward to Friday and get behind the lads

Heaven help us there are people on here who think Sam Hughes never proved himself last season. He was flagged up as an exceptional talent 3 years ago, by among others Callum McIntyre. I give up!!!

Without risking first team players like Vassell? It is very common for players coming back from injury to play in reserve fixtures, vassell was way off the pace on Saturday when he came on and Mcarthy obviously felt like he needed the minutes to get him ready for Friday.

I said he never proved himself at centre half, because he wasn't played there. Macca and Sharps identified in the close season that he was better at centre half so naturally put the time in on the training ground helping him with his new position before throwing him into the team. Sorry if that was somehow unclear...

If you look at the Southport game, would you rather have had him or Mahon as sub? I think he's a decent player - did well last year, won't be long before he features.
