I dunno what you're all whinging about. I'm just pleased that the plastic bankrolled teams are at a minimum in that league and the smaller ones that have a bit of money pumped in are not doing very well anyway

I know where you're coming from, and I agree to a certain level, but my point is that they're top of the league and have a group of plastic fans following them. If you start badly then will fans come to watch? They don't now. I'm saying it's risky. Darlington is a bigger club than Chester attendance wise (historically, looking back at seasons when you were in the same divisions they always had a higher attendance, albeit in previous incarnations of both clubs) yet they only get approx 1,500.
Sorry, this was a reply to dmcnally. In addition - I wouldn't be too sure with the "and never will be" comment. You could argue that they're bigger than you now and can grow.

Stop talking sense it's not allowed on here!

Historically Chester have always averaged over 2,000. When it was priced well and we were winning games we were averaging 2,500. This was in conference North. The same league.
We go back without that crest of a wave but it is not inconceivable that we can hit an average 500-700 lower, being a drop of circa 30-40%

Without a crest of a wave, indeed a general sense of apathy, and without a Tranmere or Wrexham gate to boost that average. Again, I'm saying if you don't hit the ground running then you'll struggle to hit that 1,700. The prediction should be worst case scenario, or you run the risk of overbudgeting and going bust. If you budget for 1,700 but get the 1,000 - 1,200 that you state is realistic you'll be looking at approx £10k shortfall per match. Call it £200k. Ouch!

But as has been pointed out, you budget for 1000, you get NFU so you resign yourself to failure.
In this league whilst we have Tranmere and Wrexham we have a raft of other clubs which negate that advantage in your Gatesheads, your Dovers, Bromleys and Boring Woods.
Put it another way, if we cannot sustain a football club with the size and history of Chester FC in the mid-higher thousands then the club is pretty much doomed to fail anyway.

At the level you're at maybe. It all depends on if you're willing to accept that maybe the next level down again is more the level the city is geared for. Rather that than non-existence? Sad (genuinely sad btw not a wind-up), but true?

Historically, i have long advocated that growing the fanbase was more key to the success of Chester than succeeding on the field. I wrote a lengthy post on the old DC when i felt we'd lost that impetus in our first conference year and probably repeated the same view every year thereafter.
What i do believe, is that there is an appetite in Chester for a local, community football team and whilst i accept the view of LK to budget for 1700, i have higher hopes as i believe the fans are there if we can get things back on track. I sat around a table with some people who shared your view but if we cannot get back to that level the club will naturally end up as you say, as a reasonably well-supported northern team.

This thread convinced me that unless we have substantial income from the anonymous donor, we can only survive and regroup if we go part-time at least for next season

Admittedly part time but FCUM with a mix of young players, old hasbeens and non contract extras have avoided relegation with a playing budget nowhere near the giddy heights of £250,000.
