Just been doing some research about Chester's Pre-War Boxer's. Jimmy Walsh and Freddie Tilston who both came from Handbridge and I just wondered if anyone had any more information? Jimmy Walsh was British Lightweight Champion between 1936 and 1938 and was scheduled for a World Campionship title fight with defending champion Louie Ambers but the Americians wanted 'ridiculous money' for fighting, in the UK. The other was Freddie Tilston. Fred or Freddie had a successful career as a boxer. He had his first professional fight at the age of 15 at Liverpool's Pudsey Street Stadium. He went on to fight 51 fights at Liverpool Stadium where he was always top of the bill & of those fights he won 39, lost 10 & drew 1. Out of the 39 wins, 25 were knock outs! Known as ;The Liverpool Flash, Freddie had a number of fights in Canada, where he went for a few years and where he is said to have sparred, with some of the American Champions of the time. Before, he came back to Chester, where he worked as a bricklayer and was affectionately known, as the 'Lump hammer hammer'. His fight record is here:+ boxrec.com/en/boxer/78363Attachments:
