Seeing as no one else has bothered, might as well get this going. I've long since accepted that we are way down the pecking order but this squad seems even more lacking in talent than ever. Kane, Ali and possibly Sterling (based on club performances only) are the only players approaching anywhere near world class. Weak in central defence, no creativity in midfield and arguably the most talented player, Lallana, won't be on the plane. Why are Welbeck and Young anywhere near the squad. Should be able to muddle our way out of a weak group, in second place, but can't see us going any further.

Let’s be honest we have had all the big names in the past and they haven’t managed to get us past the group stage so it’s all about the team as a whole not if they are world class or not.

It's the most low key build up to a World Cup. Perhaps it's the location or the realisation that England aren't any good. Maybe though we will benefit from that. We will no doubt breeze through the group and who knows...so long as we avoid Iceland. I wouldn't fancy being an English fan in Russia. They won't enjoy much protection from the police.

As for Australia we’ve left out our best CB Bailey Wright who captained Bristol City and Jaime MacLaren who scored 8 in his last 15 for Hibernian (3 in the last game of the season against Rangers) this season to include some unknown kid from Croatia and Mark Milligan. Tim Cahill gets in despite playing 157 minutes of club football this season supposedly because of sponsor pressure (they’ve renamed a petrol station in Sydney “Cahilltex” for the duration

England really should be looking to reach the quarter finals. The group is kind to them and if they get through, it’s likely to be Poland or Colombia in the next round - both decent sides but not world beaters.
Wouldn’t argue too much with the squad selection. I would probably have included Hart among the three keepers just for his experience, but for all the difference it’s likely to make you could name me as the third keeper. One player who never seems to be come into the England reckoning is Lewis Dunk despite an excellent season for Brighton.

Fair play to Southgate for giving Terence Trent D'Arby the nod for a place in the final 23 - presumably to provide the hotel entertainment.

Too true ..... I wouldn't go there if it was all expenses paid. I've got an awful feeling that the British fans are going to have some dreadful experiences with the Russian police.

I think we all know what's coming. Whilst the squad appears top heavy with defensive players and the leaving out of Lallana and Hart can be questioned, there aren't really many other options. I like the look of the lad Sessignion from Fulham but two uncapped wildcards would probably be seen as reckless. Let's hope as a poster touched on above that they play as a team. Quarter finals would be seen as a success in my opinion.

I wouldn't bank on us beating either Poland or Colombia...what's the stat...we haven't won a knock out game at senior level for 12 years! Shocking. We still have too many players that freeze when pulling on an England shirt. Still have nightmares about Iceland - thought I was watching 11 Kingsley James the way they passed the ball.

Outside of home soil, England have only won five knockout games in major tournaments, against Paraguay, Belgium (when they were crap), Cameron, Denmark and Ecuador. So basically, outside of England, we've never knocked out a top team.

They had some good players like Enzo Scifo and had reached the semi-finals four years earlier (has their golden generation got that far?) and arguably should have beaten England that night, hitting the post two or three times. Agree with the general point being made though.

Bit off topic but England U17s play in the Euro Semi finals tonight at Chesterfield against Holland. It seems at youth levels we're performing very well across the board, but senior level is where we hit problems, is it the money, development?? Who knows.
Either way a bit of advertising from me for the U17s tonight, £1 a ticket at Chesterfield FC 7pm kick off and no doubt this will help Chesterfield out, another club struggling financially.

Is it just me or am I the only one who can't conjure up much enthusiasm for both this World Cup and indeed the England team. With the exception of the odd game eg Germany destroying Brazil, I'm struggling to think of a recent tournament which I would class as exciting. Moreover, the England squad just announced is hardly inspiring - a bang average outfit totally devoid of the sort of characters eg Gascoigne or genuinely world-class players (perhaps Kane) who make you WANT to watch England or who will get bums off seats. Perhaps the Premier League's lack of home grown players, 33% I believe, is coming home to roost. It's all very formulaic and sterile and, to me, lacks the cut and thrust and raw passion of football at, for example, our level. I WAS considering going to watch England vs Costa Rica at Leeds more as a day out than for any sense of fanaticism for England but the FA have priced me out of it with tickets at £50 for a meaningless friendly against mediocre opposition.
That said, I'd like England to defy the odds and have a decent tournament but, hand on heart, can't see it given our track record

On another note as a Wales fan we have left our entire squad at home again!!!

Not so bothered about the whole England thing, although I'd love it if just once in my lifetime we won a World Cup or Euros.
The build-up to this one does seem a bit low-key. It's kind of crept up on us instead of being something we've been talking about for months. Maybe it's the whole Russia thing that's putting a bit of a dampener on it? I'm also worried all anyone's going to be talking about is VAR - it's still in its guinea pig stage and I don't think the world's biggest sporting spectacle is a good place to experiment with it.

Yes looking at the make up of the younger level England teams immigration could play an important role in future teams, rather like it did for British athletics in the past.

That Loftus-Cheek looks a player, should definitely start at the World Cup especially first two games against 'easier' opposition in Tunisia and Panama.
