Really good news to see Matty returning. After a few weeks of peace and quite, we are really getting the ball rolling now and releasing a statement of intent. I enjoyed watching Matty play in his first spell here. He scored a few for us and looked lively up top. Hopefully he will be a success for us this season and can form a strong partnership with Jordan Archer. Welcome back to Chester FC Matty! 🔵⚪️🔵⚪️

Yep, glad to see him back. Hasn’t set the world alight since his loan spell but he is a good player.

Judging by his other halfs facebook he's buzzing to be back and has kept tabs on our results when he left the club

According to the Lancashire Telegraph he re-signed for Chorley last week! Strange.

According to the Lancashire Telegraph he re-signed for Chorley last week! Strange. Statement from Chorley FC -
Unfortunately, we are sorry to announce that Matty Hughes has decided to return to Chester FC for the 2018/19 season.
We know all supporters were looking forward to watching Matty play for The Magpies again, as was everyone else connected with the football club.
“This is just one of those things that happens during football’s offseason,” manager Matt Jansen said. “We’d had really good talks with Matty after the season ended, and thought we’d done enough to convince him to stay on for another season. This was something that was agreed with Matty and ourselves.
“Unfortunately for us Matty had a change of heart, so it just wasn’t to be - he has expressed his desire to join Chester, a club where he has a very good reputation and a club where arguably he’s played some of his best football. When a player states that they want to leave the club then there’s not much we can do - although we did try. We want to thank Matty for his performances last season and wish him all the best at Chester.”

Buzzing with this. Sounds like they’re gutted to lose him as well which is usually a good indication.

As if re-signing for us isn’t great news in itself but then to learn he turned his back on Chorley, makes Matty a Chester Legend before the season has even started! Welcome back Matty!

Clearly nothing on paper, so just pleased he’s put pen to paper for Chester. That’s the power of having this new management team. I doubt McCarthy or even Bignot would have secured his signing.

Great signing imo, looking at Chorley and Fylde fan's comments he always gives it a good effort which is what i imagine the new managers are looking for. Didn't catch him first time round so hopefully can see him this time pull on the Chester shirt. I imagine this was the nail in Akintunde's coffin, as i could imagine he was one of the released that had a possibility of staying.

I presume he's been playing wide?
His scoring stats don't look great. Appears to be 4 in 24 for us. 9 in 76 for Fylde. He only scored 4 last season for Chorley, not sure how many games he played. Perhaps someone could correct or embellish these stats.

Must of offered him a nice wedge to come back Are we at it again? Giving money away for nothing? Wedge of cash and a agents fee? Haven't the board learnt from last season, handing out money we don't have?

Someone makes an unsubstantiated comment and immediately it is the gospel truth and the board is being lambasted! You couldn't make it up. Oh, you could. I know there is history, but maybe, just maybe the lad wants to play for us?

I think it's telling that since he was last here, Hughes has been involved in two promotion-chasing campaigns from this division. He's got a winning mentality that we've been lacking for so long now.
Presume he's more of a winger these days. If he can add a few more goals this season then he'd be some player at this level.

Always liked Matty and will always remember Dartford away about 2015 when he, JR, SMc and CM tear them apart second half scoring 4 times. Let's not forget he left Fylde as one of the players involved with match betting so he maybe slightly cheaper than his ability suggests

Seriously, what did happen there? was it just losing the loanees? we were on fire at that time

Was that when Steve Burr 'had a dream'? Seriously, what did happen there? was it just losing the loanees? we were on fire at that time We had some excellent loanees that season - Hughes, Mcburnie, Oates, Barnsley midfielder together with players like Sean Mcconville who were comfortable on the ball. We played good football from the back with a midfield that wanted the ball. I think clubs started looking at us as a good option for their fringe 1st team players rather than the dross we mostly got the following season
