Was that when Steve Burr 'had a dream'? Seriously, what did happen there? was it just losing the loanees? we were on fire at that time We had some excellent loanees that season - Hughes, Mcburnie, Oates, Barnsley midfielder together with players like Sean Mcconville who were comfortable on the ball. We played good football from the back with a midfield that wanted the ball. I think clubs started looking at us as a good option for their fringe 1st team players rather than the dross we mostly got the following season Yes, it's easy to forget that we had a decent season that year, finishing in the top half, winning at Southend and taking Barnsley to a Second Round reply. Half the squad that year was put together with the Conference North in mind as well, so it was not a bad achievement at all.
We started the following season well too. I think perhaps you can pinpoint the 5-2 defeat at Woking on the August Bank Holiday 2015 as the moment where Burr lost the plot, and really the club has been on the slippery slope ever since.

Mind you the Woking defeat was mostly due to Heneghan red card after about 15 mins

Decent season that. Mind you, most of our fans are more interested in ridiculing Burr's fashion sense and a catchphrase than give him a bit of credit where it was due.

Good shout. I think we were still in the game after the sending off (Hennighan?), but we played gung ho and never had a plan B. Instead of defending deep and trying to hit on the break we just carried on as if we had 11 players on the field. Kay scored a cracker and Rooney hit one of his special free-kicks for the best 2 goals of the game. That was at the beginning of a horrendous run against them which I think is now 9 consecutive defeats.

Decent season that. Mind you, most of our fans are more interested in ridiculing Burr's fashion sense and a catchphrase than give him a bit of credit where it was due. It was a decent season that went a bit pear shaped towards the end, but we had a respectable league finish and a decent cup run. We had a clear identity of playing from the back and having players who were comfortable receiving the ball. The accusation was that we didn't have a plan B, and that was fair enough. Burr went too far in trying to address this and his recruitment and subsequent style stunk of a guy that has a crisis of confidence in his philosophy and we ended up not ever looking like we had a clear game plan. He went through the strange period of playing strikers on the left wing, or pumping diagonals to Hobson, but nothing worked and it really exposed his flaws as a manager. He's good at getting teams to play a bit of football, but once teams gets wise to it then he doesn't have the tactical nous to adapt. The best managers have a clear philosophy, but with a flexibility of being able to change things within a game if needed. Burr's career path would suggest that he'll find it difficult to get a job in the higher levels of non-league again - he dined off that decent spell with Kidderminster and the reputation for developing rough diamonds, but never build on it. Possibly unfair of me to say, but maybe his work ethic is what he held him back - he seemed to enjoy his summer holidays that would spill into pre season and appeared to prefer a round of golf rather than spending a spare Saturday scouting players/opposition. I still shudder at that Leader article of the Gary Mills v Steve Burr fashion show - hands down the worst thing I've ever read.

I remember when I was commentating on our 3 - 0 defeat to Barnet and he came over to talk with me and another Chester mate about half an hour before ko. Very easy going and interesting Guy but I didn't wonder why he said my bits done now. Jon will prepare them for the warm up
