There is a big debate going on in another thread regarding the installation of a 3g/4g pitch at the Deva so I thought I'd put a poll on to see what support it has me I've always said football should be played on grass

Grass for me too. Our playing surface is one of the best in this league; it would be a shame if we change it one day.

Grass for me too. I know some posters have estimated that although an expensive up front cost, a 3G facility could pay for itself within 5-10 years. However this worries me that the club would be committing to such a period in non-league. If a return to the football league in the near future is a priority for the board and club then I believe grass needs to remain the way forward.
Also, I just prefer watching football on grass....feels proper.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Doncaster use something along the artificial side of things, Just looked up their pitch update for the start of last season and it looks like they use something called artificial Desso fibres. I did a quick google on it and got this;
GrassMaster is a hybrid grass sports playing field surface composed of natural grass combined with artificial fibres. If that's allowed in the EFL then surley that is something we should be looking at as for the long term future.

The question I’d have is, can we get permission to even have a 4G pitch? If so, what happens if ymthe council decide after our lease to knock down the ground and make houses? extreme and long term I know, but I’d be cautious making hugely costly change to something that we don’t own. Here’s a huge question, what would the cost be in owning the stadium outright from the council?

They would never sell it on and thank god they were stubborn enough to reject Vaughan's ideas. We'd be playing every sunday at goals if he got that.

Yeah it figures that it would cost a fortune I just wondered how much of a fortune. The land alone I very much doubt would be used for houses, personally I wouldn’t have to live on an industrial esttate, but stagecoach or a manufacturers would probably snap it up in a Heartbeat for a rental price to the council.

Footballing sense: grass Business sense: plastic Disagree, for both grass is best given the huge cost of putting in plastic and the huge cost of ripping it up when we get promoted back into the league. There is also the environmental cost, plastic pitches are not eco-friendly (in fact they are a real disaster in terms of plastic use) and there are concerns that they are not health of players friendly too with some linking them to cancer. In the past when grass was not what it is today and was slower growing and therefore more prone to wear and mud then there was a potential argument, but modern grass strains now are so good that I really can't see any point in even thinking of artificial.

Looks like the city is already well served by artificial pitches, almost to the point of saturation, in which case another new venue could only hope for a transfer of allegiance from existing venues. As such, not a benefit to the community and not worthy of grant aid or community support. From a business perspective it is not easy to gain a successful market entry into an already saturated market, so doesn’t make business sense either. Successful artificial pitches have been in areas with a latent demand. Not the case in Chester. The older ones will remember the over saturation of squash provision of 30 years ago as an example. There must be areas of latent demand in Chester and this, coupled with a community project, is the way to go. As I don’t live in the area I don’t know exactly what exists, but surely greater access for the disabled is a positive, and much needed, starting point.

Why is it one or the other? Stick a 4g in the car park to generate revenue for the club and allow foul weather training to give the grass more time to recover? Play our matches on grass.
Having people come/go to the 4g will probably generate more revenue for the club (snacks, sports kit, etc) and make the place feel less stranded at the end of Bumpers Lane (if you go there outside of match days you’d be forgiven for thinking you were the last survivor of the zombie apocalypse).

Oooh goody another pointless poll! Of course people are going to pick grass over plastic...
But what if the question was:
Make money all year-round and all age groups of the club's football teams train and play on it.
Or keep the grass and keep paying thousands to other companies each year to train on their pitches.
🤔

I don't think there's a full sized 4g pitch in the area currently. Goals is 5 and 7 aside pitches so they won't rival it

Stick to Car Parks Oaks Blue. Not sure when its gonna be free to be hired out when all our teams that cost the club "thousands to other companies" are using it?

Only problem being there isn’t enough space in the car park for a full sized pitch. The club have had it sized up.

Is it just me that doesn’t really care?
Maybe the decision should be put to the manager and players? They’re the ones playing on it.

Grass all the way for me. We must be wary about 3/4G even as a training/community facility. As stated elsewhere plenty of options for this elsewhere in Chester.

They'll all be gone in a couple of years, and the next manager / players may have the opposite opinion. We, as a club, should decide how we best run our club, and employ people who best fit that plan. We may lose quite a few older supporters if we changed to 4g/3g. It creates a different type of football. Grass for me.

As has been stated above.. £162 for one hours use.. Think about it If it's a base for all of our junior teams etc then how much are we really going to make? Presumably they'd be using it for free. To answer the question, 100% for grass... both in a sporting sense and in a business sense.

The club must charge parents the fee for booking the pitch now so why wouldn't that same fee come to us?
