As the World Cup gets interesting Wayne Rooney signs almost un noticed for DC United in MLS, effectively signalling the end of his career. Still only 32. To think he was once being heralded alongside Messi and Ronaldo...sort of petered out really.

Highest paid player in their history though so swings and roundabouts.

Does he need the money? Maybe thinks that him and Colleen are the new Posh and Becks.

For all that people say he’s petered out, he’s both Man Utd and England’s all-time record scorer, and has won everything at domestic level, but seems a bit unloved by everybody. I think perhaps he was so ridiculously hyped as a teenager, he’s seen to have underachieved. Probably doesn’t help that he’s come through at the same time as Messi and Ronaldo who make the best of the rest look a very distant third.

You are probably right....too much expectation. Difficult to argue that he's had a decent career, but just feel he could have delivered more. My memory of him in an England shirt is the Iceland game when he couldn't hit a pass two yards. Also feel he has thrown the towel in a couple of years early.

Of all the major tournaments he's played in I can only recall a goal he scored against Croatia in a 4-2 win as being memorable. Apart from that he's largely done little at major tournaments.

Over in the USA they have entire retirement villages full of old grannies. Perhaps that’s the attraction.

You do feel that if America really embraced football it could own the sport and the MLS would become the league to play in. Even as the only the fifth or sixth biggest sport over there, clubs have resources to match our biggest and games often sell out 60,000-70,000 stadiums.
I kind of like the idea a league outside of Europe genuinely competing and its teams being as good as those in the Premier League and La Liga. Not sure I want it to be America though!

Not even close to Messi and Ronaldo. At the 2004 Euros he was brilliant but never fulfilled that potential.

Some pretty extensive tarpaulin use makes these games a technical sell out in these huge stadia with no where near 60-70k attendance. Think a couple of teams are beginning to get North of 40,000 though bow which is big growth. Teams are more and more moving into purpose built soccer stadia rather than playing in the deserted NFL bowls though.

It also appears that the signing by Barrow of John Rooney has likewise gone under the radar 😁

It also appears that the signing by Barrow of John Rooney has likewise gone under the radar 😁 He's a bit of a non-enitity mercenary to be fair. When Barrow get relegated he will be getting his Agent to line up another move to a National League club like Harrogate. If we really want "to be fair", we'd give players a break at this level signing up for the next pay check to the bidder that makes most sense to them at any given point.
