Several posts deleted after a request regarding the posts about domestic violence, although the intention by the OP was lighthearted, we as Mods rarely interfere in free speech, unless asked to, on this occasion we were asked to, hence the deletions, which also quoted the OP. Thanks Ian

I think these sentences are harsh. We as society and tax payers will have to ultimately foot the bill for prison and the rehabilitation after. Not sure it’s a good use of money in this case. To me a football ban and community service would have been more appropriate. Personal opinion.
As an aside I’ll be very interested in the punishments handed out to the idiots who smashed up the ambulance in London on Saturday ‘celebrating’ England’s win.

Sentencing seems very excessive to me. Looks like there is an attempt to send out a clear message, football related violence will not be tolerated in York. Hard to argue with that message really.

I’m not sure why people are talking about rapists and paedophiles. If you have to use a comparison like that to play down a crime, it probably says a lot. For what it’s worth, I would probably agree that jailing these lads is not the best use of resources, but that’s what the law has decided, and at the end of the day we all know it’s wrong to go around fighting in city centres, and there is too much of it connected to football and I’m sick of hearing about it. Maybe people might think about harder about how they carry on if they know there are harsh sentences. It’s very easy to go to a football match and not get in a fight. As someone who appears to have a left-wing ideology I am quite surprised by that. It is the Conservative government who have made sure people who are involved football related disorder are given worse sentences than those who are involved in the sickening abuse of children. They brought in the fencing which showed the contempt they had for those who followed football by treating them like animals. This government in the guise of the Ministry of Justice continue to treat football fans as second class citizens as illustrated by the punitive sentences issued to the Chester and York supporters. Amazing how many times we hear about documentation and reports going missing when it involves allegations of child abuse against prominent figures in government and in the supposed higher echelons of society and justice for those vulnerable children is never served. However, if it is a bit of trouble at a football match this government believe in throwing away the key.
