I see there are calls for Millwall to be charged after their fans targeted Tottenham Hotspur forward Heung-min Son with chants during Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final. Son was subjected to chants of ‘DVD’ and ‘he’s selling three for a fiver’ by the travelling Millwall fans at White Hart Lane.
Is this really racist or just Harmless Banter ? What's the difference between this, and Benitez getting called a 'fat Spanish Waiter' at every ground he goes to
Football seems to have gone PC mad at the minute.

You're right in a way. There's no difference and if one is unacceptable, so is the other.
The reality is though that it's an offence anywhere else, and maybe football needs to move with the times a little bit. I don't think that necessarily means grounds need to lose their atmosphere, but maybe fans themselves have to think about different ways they can create it.

Well millwall have always had a reputation of causing trouble etc. but if the player feels offended they will probably get charged.

I've read reports of them making hissing noises alongside the Son stuff. The hissing is disgraceful if true and it wouldn't surprise me with Millwall.

Somebody somewhere will find it offensive and that is what makes it unacceptable behaviour. And let's face it, it's a bit Neanderthal in today's society. Son probably doesn't give a shit. He's sticking his Rolex on, jumping in his Ferrari and heading back to his Asian, supermodel wife at their mansion in Hertfordshire. And who can blame him!

I can't believe their even taking this seriously. Millwall taking the mick out of a stereotype of an Asian, is different from them abusing a person because they are Asian. My uncle was adopted from Cambodia to escape the regime, we get him to add up the bill because 'all Asians are good at maths'. There's no difference to us calling the Welsh sheepshaggers, its a stereotype we take the piss out of, not that we actually discriminate against them for being Welsh.

If an Asian man went into a pub, shop or anywhere else and people started pointing and chanting at him about his race, it would be seen as a racist incident. You can't really argue that being in a football ground makes it different.
I'm not sure it's 'banter' either. Banter by definition is friendly, but you see real rage and hatred in people's faces and voices when they chant some of these things.

If an Irish Gypsy went into a pub and people started taking the mickey about them always stealing then it would be classed as Racist, but if a scouser walked into a bar and got the same treatment, then because he's from Liverpool and not antother country it's not racist or against the law even though he's getting the same abuse and painted with the same brush. Doesn't make sense to me

I suppose it just comes down to how it's perceived and the history behind it. Mickey taking out of Scousers is usually light-hearted and even affectionate, whereas when its black people or foreigners, maybe there's more of a history of genuine prejudice there. You're right though, you can't really decide that one group is more fair game to insult than another.

The chant is insinuating that all South East Asians sell DVDs but what they (Millwall) fail to realise is that behind this trade is often human trafficking and slavery. The individuals need educating about some of the tragic stories that some of the individuals who sell these DVDs have been subject to.
On a much lighter note this will always be my perception of Millwall fans:
This is pure comedy gold especially the Mark Gatiss in "League of Gentleman" type character Billy. Imagine him heading after you, you'd laugh in his face. The bloke who don't like Northerner's is comedy genius!

It's crazy isn't it? People are potentially prosecuted for stereotyping Koreans for being technologically sophisticated and having business acumen? There is far worse personal abuse thrown at footballers every Saturday that passes without comment. The poster who mentioned stereotyping Scousers has a good point. We have developed a form of racism where any abuse can be thrown at the native population but any reference to foreigners is forbidden. Surely the Metropolitan police have got enough to do without becoming involved in pc politics.

The tone of TV programmes back then seems so patronising. It's like TV was targeted towards people living in an upper class bubble.

Sorry, some serious points have been raised in this thread but can't string together a coherent argument either way because I've just been watching this video over and over again. Absolutely mesmerising. Arrogant Blue, what have you done, sharing this? Was meant to be working from home today, had shed loads to do, but acheived nothing cos I've just been watching Billy and his Mick Hucknell-esque ginger afro and his massive flares all day. Don't like to take the piss cos I'm sure they were properly scary at the time, but now it's like watching the sunshine bus. I mean, he must weigh about five stone max, and the thought of him steaming in with a surgical mask wrapped round his head, what the actual fuck? And that fella who justifies starting trouble at Bristol "because you always get some northerner starting...." Genius.

Maybe I read it wrong and if I were the original poster I would clarify because if read it right it's appalling racism.

Yeah that's a good point. My take on the original poster was that he/she was saying that the chants towards Son were harmless banter. Maybe I read it wrong and if I were the original poster I would clarify because if read it right it's appalling racism. The Pount I was trying to make was that as far as what's allowed and what isn't allowed to be chanted/said in a football stadium, before it's classed as racist and not just harmless banter is something I'm confused about - hence me asking the question and using the Benitez chant as an example. Would I myself join in any of these chants ? No I wouldn't, but would I say that Millwall should be done for their chanting ? well if the authorites are not prepared to clamp down on the Benitez one being sung, then they can't just go all PC with regards this one and decide it needs looking at, when they've let chants like this and worse than this go for years. Basically the footballing authorities make it up as they go along, usually based on how high profile an occasion, and whose involved. Millwall are an easy target in this instance because of their reputation in the past. Everton FC fans start singing 'Fat Spanish waiter' to Benitez then it's just their scouse humour coming out and everyone passes it off as banter. Millwall do virtually the same thing but to someone whose Korean, and non white and because of their reputation then they are classed as 'racist Chants' when both are just the same. Man United sang songs about Park eating dogs for the whole time he was at United, again it was passed off as banter and acceptable, because they were songs being sung by United fans supporting him, so no wonder I'm confused !!!!
