Interesting piece in the Chronicle about one of Terry's Smith's many obscure signings.
Thought at the time he came across as something of a gentle giant, and seems a nice guy here, saying he looks out for our results!

Famous for his handball against Villa in the League Cup - oh what might have been had we held out 0-0 or even nicked a late winner in that first leg (we still would have been hammered at Villa Park, I'm sure).
I was around about 13 at the time and I remember him as a really nice guy, who spoke barely any English but always had a smile on his face.

Remember him being massive as well. At least 6'4' and pretty muscular. Didn't really look like a footballer!

Interesting quote from Goran:
"Terry Smith was in charge at the time and I spent about six months there and it was a difficult time. When Ian Atkins came in he wanted players and defenders who could kick the ball clear. He did not want footballers and so I left."
He was hardly Bobby Moore from what I can remember.
The article also highlights Terry Smith's approach to player recruitment, erratic, non-structured and get them in cheaply.

I often think it’s a wonder we managed to get any points at all with a barmy American in charge and a team of randoms playing for their bus fare. I suspect if he hadn’t brought Atkins in when he did we would have started getting five or six put past us every week though!
Saying that, we did have arguably the best striker in the division in Luke Beckett. He was about the only player Atkins kept in the team when he arrived, along with Matt Woods who he got playing surprisingly well.

One of the worst ‘footballers’ ever to wear a Chester shirt.

Didn't he come to training and matches on a push bike. That was Moz. Defo Goran as well. My Dad and I saw him coming to the ground on a bike when we were there queuing for tickets one time. Seemed a really friendly fella!

It’s only us Brits who think it’s somehow quaint or idyllic to go to work on a bicycle. Go somewhere like Holland or Denmark and you’re never more than ten feet from a bike.

Yes I actually passed him one day on his bike on his way to training. According to the Chron he was 6' 7". I wouldn't dream of dissing him as he was just a part of the dreadful mad yank's era, when it was so bad I just stopped coming.

We all heard his foreign name and assumed he was the next Savo Milosevic or something. Remember he was unveiled before a game. Remember it clear as day. Then he started playing.. the rest is history

Thought he was one of the better imports from that era, but not really suited to lower league English football. The handball vs Villa was simply inexplicable, however
