Stopforth and Burton looked great in the middle yesterday but we need Gary Roberts in the team. I believe he played right back at Bangor, could this be a way of get him in the team and keep the same shape. His experience would be great in a shacky back four because poor Dom Smalley had a shocker yesterday What would be your thoughts?

Might be a decent shout. Someone else posted something similar on another thread.
He's played there and has the experience. Has he still got the pace to play there?
I actually think Roberts, Thomson or Moran would all be less of a liability than Smalley.
If you were the FC United scout you'd target Smalley all game. Bradford's no.10 pulled onto him more and more yesterday. Partly because he was the smallest defender, and partly because he was struggling so much. Pity as he got rave reviews last season, but the step up has really found him out. In a lesser way so have Pritchard and Shenton. Hopefully they'll adjust.

I'd much rather play three in the midfield and play Thomson at right back. Not sure why we'd move a quality centre-mid to right back when we have a promising youngster sat on the bench. Would hardly be a vote of confidence in his potential.

I do agree about Matty Thomson, I think he would more than capable to do a job. But as a first year pro, think bedding him in slowly would be the key, as we all know men's football is a big step up from youth at any level although the lads that are coming through have been so impressive and I think they will all get better as the training goes on.

I said this exact thread in the match thread yesterday. I’d play same team on Tuesday and if Smalley doesn’t play well bring Roberts in.

Roberts at Fullback !!!! At least his wild red card lunges in midfield only give away free kicks, and not penalties.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see this happen tonight. Smalley struggled again on Saturday and so makes sense to try and change it if we have this option available. Also with Burton and Stopforth playing so well Saturday would not get into a centre midfield birth at this stage.

I'm not sure Gary has the pace to play that role at this level. I'd shudder to think of him on a big pitch like the Deva up against a pacy winger. And we all know that tackling is not exactly his best attribute. For me, you play your best players in their best positions, and that means that Roberts needs to be playing centrally. He's got the quality to run games from that position and offers the vision that neither Burton or Stopforth have. So it's either change formation to accommodate Gary, or drop Stopforth probably. It would be harsh, but its a good problem to have. I have a feeling we may well change formation as despite the win on Saturday, the balance certainly wasn't right. Or Mooney and Mahon as asked to sit deeper to protect the full backs. Either way, its a nice problem for the managers to have, but not one I envy them on!
Alternatively, with Burton having a suspect hamstring at the moment then maybe its too soon for him to be playing two games in a week. Therefore Gary could play 70 odd minutes to get some fitness back and give Scott a run out in the last 20 if needed.

We would need to play 3 central if we lost Stopforth, due to the amount of running and closing down he does. Roberts tends to drop deeper as the game goes on. Him and Burton would both be sitting deep. Leaving loads of space. The balance is more important than the individual. If we want to play 4 attacking players, the remaining 2 midfielders and the defence will be exposed at times. As we saw Saturday.

We’re not going to see our current best team until George Green becomes fit and available. In my opinion, it appears certain is that we will have a very solid bench that is able to consolidate a game as well as change a game.
