For this to work (when it failed miserably with Maguire) the appointee will have to be accountable to the membership and to Stuart himself. Stuart will have experience of this when the previous board seemed taken in by Maguire's "charm offensive".

There also needs to be a very clear set of roles and responsibilities which includes regular performance management and targets. This sort of role would be expected to bring in at least double the salary paid in a normal business setting. Given that the Commercial Working Group is already hitting the set financial targets and is entirely voluntary, it is going to be a tall order, in my opinion, to make this role a viable one financially.

It will be viable as we'll be entering a new playing field if we extend our facilities. He/she will be targeting non match day revenue more than anything, so naturally the numbers will start to increase.

The day hitting targets becomes good enough is the day we stop growing as a club though. We need to be smashing targets and heightening expectations, forecasting growth year on year and improving everything off the field financially. I think it’s a necessary role for any business, but it’s about getting the right man.

This is a very tough job, all four appointments made since we reformed in similar positions have had their issues for one reason or another and struggled to make the right decisions. Their ego needs to be kept in check and use the experience of the current volunteers/ board members on what has worked and what hasn't in past or whatever reason and use that as a basis going forward.

I don't know the full story with MM, but from the outside it looked like he was being spread too thinly. The new CM just needs to focus on £s. It looks like the Stuart Murphy donation is going to give us huge potential not just only to raise cash, but by getting people down to the stadium - putting the club back in the conscience of local people.

I think it would be wise to give the new ceo a modest basic salary with bonuses for achieving targets.
I doubt very much if Maguire ever even recovered his £55k salary.

Do you mean Commercial Manager rather than CEO? If so then I was just about to post exactly the same thing. Commercial Manager is a glorified sales role and as such, should have a minimal basic salary and then good bonuses. That'll protect the club but also ensure that the person that comes in is motivated to work their backside for their own and the club's benefit. The club NEED to get this right. I'm hopeful that Stuart Murphy's input will ensure we've learned the lessons of the past.

The membership appoint a board of directors that every member of staff reports to including this senior role which makes them accountable to membership. Parts of the work that Mark did improved the club and other unfortunately failed massively, but the same has happened with the three others in the same role, Pat, Dave Riche and Tracey, none of whom excelled. When the new appointment has been made I will certainly be in touch to offer any help as this is main part of the club that is seriously lagging behind for many reasons due to one thing or another.

I said on here that I approached the club while MM was there and had no response. Within a day I’d had a message from someone I won’t name at the club, asking if I’d be interested in helping with something I’d put myself forward for. The only issue turned out to be the distance I live from Chester as it wouldn’t have worked for that particular role, which is totally understandable. I find it hard to believe that people any still being ignored when they offer help, maybe under MM, certainly not now.
