Thought last night was an entertaining game and Macc are the best team I have seen in the two games this season by a mile, how they are not further up the table is beyond me. That said, I thought a few players stepped up to the plate last night, Durrell for one who I thought was outstanding first half. Dawson I like the look off, ok not everything came off , but he plays with a confidence of at least trying things. Sam Hughes was , well just Sam Hughes enough said. Defensively we blocked most things but allowed them too much freedom especially first half, their first goal was of unbelievable quality at this level, if Barcelona scored it then it would be on a loop on Sky Sports news. Second half, whether it was forced through a knock or whether JM bit the bullet, he reverted to the back four that we all know should be our first choice back four, it was better but still not great, but then as I said earlier Macc are the best team I have seen all season in both games. Problem is still a lack of support for the still improving Alabi, who I thought was immense last night. As Anders mentioned earlier in the thread, anyone could have knocked our second goal in, I actually thought he mis kicked it too, maybe I am doing Kane a bit of injustice though on his one yard tap in. Didn't see the Eastleigh game, but if we continue to play like we did last night, I think we will be absolutely fine.

Pass and move! Attack with pace!
Simples!
Beaten by a far better side which begs the question:
"How can a team with similar (not identical I admit) resources to us produce a team like that and a performance like that when we can't?"
Answers on a postcard please

I thought we passed the ball around well last night, there seemed to be a real effort to keep the ball on the deck or play balls over their midfield into Alabi's feet. Going forward we were threatening and could have come away with something, but our defensive problems showed again. We are the 6th highest scorers in the division but are being let down time and again by a lack of organisation at the back. Macc played well though I thought, their number 7 destroyed us particularly second half and they were able to open up our defence with some nice passing moves. This is a team who are on a similar budget to us but have made some clever signings for this level, it's where we aspire to be but there is a big gulf between us and them. Durrell played well up front first half and it was good to see both strikers pressing and looking to win the ball back. Alabi is too good for us, would love him to stay but he'll be off in the summer. He held the ball up really well and created chances for us. Every game he creates something out of nothing, his run to set up our second goal was excellent. If only he had scored his effort that hit the post. Was impressed with Dawson again, and he'll get better with more match practice. Durrell or Alabi for man of the match. Nervously looking over our shoulder now, we need to get something Saturday. 7 points clear of relegation currently, by 5pm Saturday we could possibly be just 4 points clear, or be all but safe on 10 points clear. Not feeling optimistic though. I look at the defence and man for man they are all good players and were the back 4 during the run of clean sheets. But tactically we've changed - the midfield don't press like they used to. Earlier in the season Macca frequently mentioned how they work on pressing and when to do it and when to sit off. I think the tinkering with tactics has definately led to uncertainty in when to press the ball, and also depleted confidence seemed to have sapped the players energy too. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, the midfield just appear to move sideways in their shape and ask teams to play through us, rather than pressing the ball. That's ok away from home when you'd expect to surrender the majority of possession and counter attack, but at home we have to be more ambitious than that and take the game to teams. Macc were able to pass around our midfield last night and that winning goal was similar to the Tranmere one in that someone has been afforded too much space on the edge of the area and if you allow that too often then sooner or later it pings in the net. Perhaps we need to push the defence a bit higher up in the latter stages of games, taking away that space on the edge of the area - again that's down to confidence, as we're petrified of getting done for pace in behind, but defending so deep without that midfield protection is suicidal as its just allowing teams far too much space on the edge of the area to pick a pass or have a pop. Last night I thought we either sat back too much allowing Macc space, or press but incorrectly, also allowing Macc space. You often see the likes of Shaw and Lloyd doing it individually but it leaves gaps, it needs to be done as a team like Macclesfield were doing. It’s difficult to go full pelt for 90 minutes, especially for part time players but we need to be a bit smarter.

I don't want to appear on a witch-hunt but the lack of pace of Astles/Hudson as a centre-back partnership inevitably means we defend deeper. The strength of Hughes/Astles is Hughes additional pace and good reading of the game.

Was it just me or was Alabi on his knees pummelling the turf with both hands when Maccs third goal went in?

Answers on a postcard please Because they have a manager who knows what he's doing. McCarthy is useless.

Him, Hughes , Shaw, Hunt, Astles and in parts Durrel showed the right kind of passion last night. Lynch and Dawson are decent as well. Vassell looked off the pace and was to blame for their winner but I heard he is struggling with an injury. Loyd, well I can't make my mind up about him, lots of running but not much else. We missed players that can keep the ball and look forward for a positive pass (Mahon especially). The big thing that struck me last night was how much better we look when we keep the ball and don't resort to long balls over the top, Richards first touch is atrocious.
