In the past before footballers earned astronomical wages , top players were prepared to drop down the leagues to earn a crust before retiring to run a pub. This got me thinking about some of the "stars" who played for Chester
Cyril Regis - Coventry and England Alan Oaks - 600 games for Man city Ian Mellor - Sheffield Wednesday Arthur Albiston - 500 games for Man United Kevin Ratcliff - Everton And Wales Captain Steve Harkness- Liverpool Billy Dearden - Returned after 175 games and 61 goals for Sheffield United in the first division
Going further back Reg Mathewson Top player at Fulham Dave Durie Regular at Blackpool I am sure that there are many more
Perhaps Wayne Rooney would like to give us a few games if he leaves Man United , or maybe he will buy a few pubs or hotels. How times have Changed .

Gary Bennett returned after a hugely successful stint at Wrexham. He hardly comes into the category of top players who have come down the leagues. In addition to the OP I remember the excitement of the club signing players like Derek Jeffries, Paul Richardson, Roy Cheetham Joe Kennedy, Graham Pugh. Trevor Storton et al. Unfortunately those days have gone, never to return.

Paul Beesley is another one, a decent Premier League defender in his day.
Players who missed out on the Premier League era needed to keep playing as long as they could at whatever level they could cope with. You don't really see them finish at a small club like they used to, they'd rather go for a pay packed in China or Qatar, or just retire at the top seeing as most even average Premier League players these days probably have enough money to live in luxury for the rest of their lives by the time they're 30.

Talking about top players dropping down the leagues - I've just noticed that Jamie O'Hara has signed for wealthy Billericay

I seem to remember Edgar Davids playing for Barnet, bit of a drop down the leagues if you ask me Cant imagine he was on much of a wage, probably just loved playing football whatever the level.

Easy to say we never sign those sort of players anymore, but I'd say the careers of Andy Griffin (played in the FA Cup Final and Champions League for Newcastle United) and Danny Higginbotham (lengthy Premier League career) who've both played for the reformed club were no less impressive than a couple of the names mentioned.

Great post, and very much a 'sign of the times' when today's mega rich so called superstars retire. Albeit a minor point, Ian 'Spider' Mellor joined us from Man City, and left us to join Sheffield Wednesday (where Jack Charlton was manager).

Going back to the early sixties, Johnny Molyneux rejoined Chester, where he had started his career after many years as Liverpool's right back. Joe Kennedy joined from West Brom, where at one time he had been considered England's best uncapped centre-half. Derek Hennin had been a fixture in Bolton's first division side for most of the fifties before he joined Chester.
With reference to earlier posts, I think Edgar Davids and Paul Gascoigne joined the clubs mentioned as a first step in management. Stan Pearson came to Chester as a player-manager in the late fifties.
Trevor Storton, Derek Jeffries and Paul Richardson weren't 'big names' when they came here. They added to their CVs during their spells here.

That excellent late 1970s team contained quite a few players who had played a reasonable amount of matches higher up the ladder. As well as those already mentioned, Doug Livermore had played for clubs including Liverpool and Norwich, while Jim Walker helped Derby win the Second Division under Brian Clough.

Yes times have changed indeed. In days gone by there was very little opportunity given to players in the top flight once they'd got to a certain age, and the only way these players could carry on was to drop down a division or 3. Players are fitter now, and most are able to see out their Career in the top division, because if you look after yourself you can play on well into your 30s, with today's strict regimes and diets.
