Taken from the Torquay forum If I had to watch Chester every week I'd give up football. A dreadful, petty, boring, cheating bunch of toe rags. Their centre back fatboys didn't look anywhere good enough, but we didn't test them enough as ever. Combined with bad luck (the goal was a joke) and the worst referee I have seen for a very long time (his Lino pal on the pop side was a useless tosser too) today was not our day. 100% for effort, but you need more than that. Chester have clearly been to the Steve Evans FairPlay football school, we have never matched that cheating mean spirited approach in all the time I have been a Torquay fan. Perhaps we can develop a mean streak for the last five games, it does seem to pay off. Seems a lot like what we were saying about Barrow on Tuesday Does doesn't it, except I couldn't figure out what exactly they were moaning about most of the time. Really irritating bunch on the day, just seemed to whinge about anything and everything for the sake of it. They started to boo Hughes, then moved on to Astles and then finally Hunt. All a bit embarrassing really.

Another great away win and I really don't care if it bounced off Sam's left gonad and right arse cheek....a goal is a goal. We have a had a few scrappy away wins now which isn't luck, it's purely down to that we are better equipped to play away than home. We deserved more at Dagenham and Dover but got nothing, so I would like to think that the last 2 games are reward for that. The injuries and lack of reinforcements mean that we cannot take the game to teams at home and give them far too much respect, but away we can soak up that pressure and counter attack with a bit more freedom. Ultimately the league table never lies and where we are at the end of the season is never a lie - that's not to say we cannot pick faults with the season but in reality I expected us to be in a relegation battle and it looks like we will be more than fine so I have to give credit to Macca and hope that he learns from his mistakes in the transfer market.

In other news, it was either Big Chris or his body double as the bouncer in Revs tonight, doing a fine job. Kept things in check and put pressure on the troublemakers.

3rd straight away win - away from our moaning bastard fans. That's interesting Heh, this did make me chuckle. Mentioned it last week but the atmosphere at an away game is completely different to what it is at the Deva. There may be grumbles under our breath but no Chester player will hear it. Just get encouraged on, no matter what.

Fantastic result today.
We did what we needed to do, that was to win the game.
Our job really this season is to be beat the teams we know we should be beating, never mind those above us, we know where our real battles are for the time being, and we have come away with a brilliant result today considering Torquay have been improving of late.
We have put enough distance between the two of us to feel a bit more comfy tonight for our National League status for next season. Good on them.
Jon McCarthy has taken some stick recently that's for sure, but the decision to give him a 2 and a half year contract is in my opinion totally justified given he has done wonders in the last 12 months and deserves the chance to try to take us forward. Whether that turns out to be the case next season remains to be seen but at least give him the chance to see what he can do.
Well done Jon, and well done Blues, hope everyone enjoyed a safe journey home.

Bit more detail.
It was probably a fortunate win, we weren’t great despite playing against ten men for large periods but just got it done. Torquay coped well a man down but never really created much themselves, just really a quick flurry of chances whilst we had two men down injured when Lynch pulled off a cracking save and Hunt cleared off the line. I don’t think either side really did enough to win, but we’ve an absolute gem in our ranks who pulled it out of the bag.
Difficult conditions, on and off rain all day but it did persistently pour down during the game itself which meant the pitch cut up and there were splashes here and there, however it was a really nice surface, a world away from Bromley last week. We weren’t getting anywhere hoofing it up in the first twenty minutes but settled down a bit after that. Hughes coped admirably out of position again, he found space on the right for his goal and thundered it in, aided by a slight deflection on the way through, really good hit though. Encouraging display from Waters, want to see him involved more, he’s definitely up to it.
Posted earlier whilst travelling home about how Torquay’s fans got on my nerves a bit. They absolutely moaned their arses off all the way through, the most whingeing bunch I think I’ve come across, just because it wasn’t going their way. Constantly moaning about decisions the ref made that were quite obviously correct more often than not. He wasn’t perfect, their lad Keating was wrongly booked and they should have had a corner in the first half but we somehow got a goal kick instead. Otherwise it was pathetic and embarrassing, booing a different Chester player every five minutes? Booed Horwood off for some reason as well despite him being clearly injured and it appears he may have done his ligaments. It’s hardly our fault their players are making stupid soft fouls.
Battled for it and won. Three on the bounce on our travels.

Yes you did mention it previously, what you did not mention is that for the last two weeks in particular the noise from the HM has been incredible, nonstop all through the game, not just in support of the players but Macca as well. Perhaps the stand should try getting behing the team at home a bit more, or join us on the HM

At the moment ,it doesnt matter too much how we get the points as long as we get them ! Unlikely we will be caught now . Must look to improve next season though as sitting in your own half for most of the game at home is unacceptable

A match between two teams looking low in confidence and carrying knocks. We played four at the back with Hughes at right back, Joyce about 2 yards in front of the back four, Horwoood behind the front 2 and Lloyd left mid, Dawson right mid. Ref was no homer and the Torquay fans quickly got on his back. Little positive action in the first half, most Torquay crosses were aimless and left to run out of play. Alabi brought down when thro', looked like a penalty to me but it was far end of the ground so can't be sure, red card for the last man. We saw a bit more of the ball second half but had an escape with the ball whizzing too and fro along the six yard box, cleared off the line (Hughes?) and a great save by Lynch. The goal was an absolute cracker from Hughes, 25 yards + to far bottom corner. Once we were infront it was hoof it as far as possible. A poor game overall.
Waters had a promising half after coming on as sub, looks to have a football brain and some ability, played a roaming role in midfield. Lloyd had a good game and Hughes, Hunt and Lynch were solid but my man of the match was Astles by a mile.

Thought the whole defence played well yesterday but the midfield struggled, albeit in difficult conditions, and gave the ball away too cheaply. Matty Waters looked to have more vision and control than any of them when he came on and should have earned a starting place next week, a great prospect.

Must admit I couldn't see the tactical plan in midfield. If Joyce is playing defence midfield I'd prefer it to be 10 yards infront of the back four, not virtually alongside the centre halves. Midfield seemed to have an unoccupied hole in the middle a lot of the time.

They reckon we're mathematically safe now. Don't think that's right?

BT Sport highlights, ours begin just after 20 mins. They reckon we're mathematically safe now. Don't think that's right? With 52 points I doubt we'd be mathematically safe until about a couple of games to go. 'Realistically safe' is the more accurate description.

It depends on those below us, if they have to play each other then they cant all get three points a game.

It depends on those below us, if they have to play each other then they cant all get three points a game. No way are we mathematically safe. Southport and NF may not be able to catch us but the other teams can certainly overtake us if we failed to get another point York could get 60 points or 57 if they lose to Woking Torquay could get 58 points or 55 if they lose to Braintree Woking could get 59 points or 56 if they lose to York Braintree could get 60 points or 57 if they lose to Torquay So while not mathematically safe, I think we can relax.

First post since I got back from Torquay (made a very long weekend of it). Haven't read any of the other posts yet.
I actually felt sorry for Torquay, because they played well without any luck at all. I hope they survive. They received from the referee exactly the same level of incompetence that we received from that fuckwit Peter Wright on Tuesday night. Sam Hughes had a captain fantastic game. Having said that in the first half he lost his footing and slipped giving the Torquay player a run on goal, but the ref blew up for a non-existent foul. Could have gone one down there. Hughes, Astles, Hudson and Hunt were, to quote Neil Turner, imperious. I don't get Dawson at all. He gives the ball away too easily. Richard, although poor, wasn't the worst player on the pitch, that was Alabi. Special mention for Matty Waters who played most of the game. I thought he was excellent and should be playing every game now til the end of the season. Not sure why Shaw was filling in for our absent assistant manager. He needs to be on the pitch.
