Our third consecutive away game is tomorrow night where we will make the short journey across Cheshire to play Runcorn Town away in the Cheshire Senior Cup 1st Round where we look to prepare ourselves in the best possible way for Saturday. We are bound to rest our main players ahead of the York City game, so this will be a good opportunity to test out some of our fringe players to get some game time.
On Saturday we drew 2-2 away at Blyth Spartans in what was a very disappointing result. We threw everything at them but couldn’t muster that winning goal as our inability to put our chances to bed cost us. The hosts were the better outfit in the first period as they were dangerous going forward, and our style of play was pretty dire as we hoofed the ball up quite often. We got off to a terrific start though as Danny Elliott fired home a free kick to make it 1-0 to us after a couple of minutes. Blyth Spartans responded though as an unmarked Michael Sweet scored for our opponents to make it 1-1. Then, things got even worse for us as Adam Wrightson netted a fantastic solo goal to make it 2-1 to Blyth Spartans. Just before the break Matty Hughes put us back into level terms as he finished off a nice move for us to make it 2-2. We were marginally better in the second half as we had more of the ball, but it turned out to be very frustrating as we couldn’t score. Matty Hughes was closest to finding a winner as he had a shocker when through on goal, as he somehow hit the post after rounding Mark Foden. At the other end, Blyth hit the woodwork too as Lewis Hawkins nodded onto the post. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough firepower to win which saw us drop two points.
Runcorn Town ply their trade in the North West Counties Premier League which is three steps below us. They currently sit in mid table after an inconsistent start, although they aren’t too far behind the play-off positions as that league is quite tight at the moment. There will be a few former blues up against us tomorrow night who are now involved at Runcorn. Ex-Chester City midfielder Paul McManus was appointed as Runcorn’s manager in the Summer after a spell as a player. On the playing side, midfielder Kevin Exell is now in his second spell at our opponents having came through our youth ranks a few years ago. Finally, former youth forward Kai Wallis signed for Runcorn in the Summer and could be playing against us tomorrow.
Of course this isn’t our main priority this season, but it would be nice to get that winning feeling back again to build some confidence. This will be my first visit to the blue side of Runcorn having visited the yellow side in pre-season last year, so I am looking forward to it. Come On You Blues!
Score: Runcorn Town 0-2 Chester FC (Elliott, Morgan)
Attendance: 217 (43 Chester FC)
My predicted lineup: Griffiths Morgan Jones Macready Molyneux Crilly Noble Cottrell Waters Elliott Waring
COYB!

Not sure whether Crilly and Noble can play in this, as they are out on loan.
Wouldn't think Waring would be risked with Asante a doubt for Saturday.

Stuart Crilly went out on loan to Sandbach back in August. I’m not sure how long it was for but if it has expired then I’d imagine that he will play tomorrow 👍.

Our younger lads mixed really well with our more senior players to produce a mature display that reaped its rewards. We put our below par finishing from Saturday behind us as we were much more clinical this evening, so hopefully that will be perfect practise for Saturday. Our experience ripped Runcorn Town away as they struggled to create openings due to our quality turning them over. They were a no-nonsense side who never gave up though and the slopey, bobbly pitch was not easy to play on, but that didn’t effect us at all as we comfortably secured our passage to the second round.
We were by far the better side in the first period as when we got into our stride, the floodgates opened which effectively wrapped up the tie. The opening 20 minutes of the game was very quiet because both outfits contributed to a rather scrappy start to the game. Due to the pitch sloping in all sorts of directions we struggled to keep hold of possession, hence there was little goalmouth action. At times Runcorn were rather dangerous going forward because obviously they are used to that surface, but once we adapted we really started to show our true colours. In a frantic period we ran rampant as we found the net four times in 14 minutes. George Waring got things underway as he reacted to a Danny Elliott effort that hit the crossbar to head home the rebound which made it 1-0 to us. Then, Danny Elliott made it 2-0 to us as he tapped home following great play by Stuart Crilly. On the half hour mark Danny Elliott netted once again to make it 3-0 to us as he smashed home a fantastic shot from the edge of the area. The Runcorn custodian should have done better to keep it out as he dived over the ball, but it wasn’t to matter for us. The man of the moment should have bagged his third as a shot by him whistled wide. On the 36th minute mark though Danny Elliott finally got his deserved hat trick as he latched onto a Crilly delivery to make it 4-0 to us. There were no further goals before the break, but that hectic period sealed the tie with 45 minutes still to spare.
The second half was a little bit more quiet, but we still produced a professional performance to inflict Runcorn with a damaging defeat. 10 minutes into the half Iwan Murray was unlucky to not have got his first of the game as his lob was unable to beat the Runcorn ‘keeper who was miles off his line. Just a minute later though we put further daylight between us and the hosts as Elliott squared the ball to George Waring, who deftly tapped home to make it 5-0 to us. Halfway through this period Danny Elliott made it 6-0 to us where at this point he was taking the mickey. Craig Mahon did really well to capitalise on a poor ball by a Runcorn midfielder which saw him play a through ball, and all Danny had to do was to score a one-on-one. After that the encounter died off a little as things got a bit scrappy again with a couple of tasty tackles in the middle. We still dictated the play though as we maintained the majority of possession to pass the time away. With minutes to spare Louis Hayes netted his first senior Chester FC goal to make it 7-0, as great work by Jake Hampson (who was making his first team debut) found Louis who swivelled with the ball to find the bottom corner. We deservedly ran out as the victors which sees us advance to the next stage.
My man of the match for this evening has got to go to Danny Elliott who put in a sensational shift. His four goals and two assists undoubtedly won us the tie as his finishing was top notch, and his link-up play was a joy to watch. Aside from that, I was really impressed with Stuart Crilly who notched two assists too. His bursts forward on the right hand side got the better of Runcorn’s slow defence, and his vision for both of his assists reaped it’s rewards. George Waring played well for us tonight as both of his goals helped us a great deal, and he did well to win a lot of headers against a combative Runcorn team. Iwan Murray’s performance was fantastic too because his trickery on the ball caused Runcorn issues, and he played a part in some of the moves for our goals. Our defence was very solid this evening and I am sure that a clean sheet will lift the spirits up after a shaky past few weeks.
This result will put us in great stead ahead of Saturday as everyone emerged from this game unscathed, and our clinical finishing will provide us with a lot of confidence. Next up is the big one on Saturday at home against York City where we look to put tonight’s practise into good use. This has got to be our biggest game for a couple of years so there are no excuses for not being at the Deva.

I’d expect Elliott and Waring to keep their place in the side on Saturday after that haul last night, despite what the management said about their performance after the disappointing draw at Blyth. If you’ve got two forwards scoring six goals between them in a game, no matter the opposition, they’ve got to stay in the team IMO. I’d put Hughes wide left and have Elliott up front - Dudley and Asante are great players to have to bring off the bench.

When you think about last season and at times wondering where goals would come from it’s marvellous that we now have the dilemma of selecting from a crop who have all been amongst the goals recently. As has been said no excuse for not making the effort to go on Saturday, I shall be making the trip from the West Midlands for Saturdays game.
