I've seen various discussions about the merits of mods and guest involvement on the new forum but thought I'd just create one thread just to explain what I'd propose and see what you all think.
Personally I quite like having guests involved purely as it encourages away fans to contribute, something I feel that the old board lacks and its down to the fact that people can't be arsed registering for something that they might only post now and again on. I'd like to see how it goes until the end of the season and then if we feel it's not working we can certainly change it to member only. I'd encourage any guests who are reading this that if they like what they see, which is a vibrant forum so far, then sign up and get involved.
With regards to moderation, I'm happy enough to take action on reported posts or remove anything that I come across that is clearly abusive. I think a lightly moderated approach would be a welcome change to the old board. Are we all happy to use the reporting function to report anything abusive to me, or would we like to see a couple more mods on board? I must add that I only really started this to show what could be knocked up quickly as an alternative option, and never expected it to gain such popularity - I don't get the chance to be on here as much as I'd like so if anyone who does visit regularly does have a burning desire to be a mod then let me know. I want as much free speech and lively debate as possible, therefore I only really want to see posts removed for those which are obviously abusive/personal - I'd certainly never ban anyone or remove posts for having a difference of opinion on football, that's what the game is all about and it would be a terribly dull world if we all had the same opinions on the game. I must admit I always found XWWB and 3mm to be great mods on the old board, and that style of moderation would be the most suitable - let the debate flow unless it's abusive.
So what do we think folks.....happy to try guests until the end of the season? Happy to report anything abusive to me, or would you rather see another mod or two on board to keep things ticking over? Over to you....

Just stick with it the way it is at the moment I think Si. Everyone seems happy enough as it is, and the place has really taken off!
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I think that would be ideal, but perhaps it's a bit easy to say that before we've had a match discussion on here or something else that really stirs emotions - you'd like to think we're all sensible enough to keep it to lively debate but history suggests it might not pan out like that!

I think inevitably Mods will be needed as the number of users continues to increase the workload will increase.
But if the board is Moderated by "consent of its members" with Mods voted in i cant see why people would take issue with it.

Can we not have the best of both worlds? Allow guests to post and maybe have another moderator just to keep things ticking over and in order? See how it pans out for the remainder of the season and then take stock in the summer and put it to a vote. I like the "open shop" format that we have here at the minute, I just don't want that being abused. That's why the moderator would be required. I'm all for freedom of speech, as I've pointed out in another thread, but a line is crossed when personal insults are thrown. I've not seen that on here yet and I hope that remains to be the case. Football is about opinions, that is what makes it great. If we are given this platform to voice it, then it'll only help "Newco" DC's stock rise as we can say it without fear of being slapped with a ban. It's just when the insults (which will be inevitable) start that's when the action is required. Maybe have a three strikes and you are out policy? No need for instant bans being handed out for silly tit-for-tats, that's for sure. Hopefully we should never have to encounter a point where we have to give warnings to members or guests but it's something to think about.

There is nothing wrong with Moderation it's needed to prevent abuse or racism etc but certainly not differing opinions - let's set some straightforward rules And make it clear what will and will not be accepted - by doing that we will get a respectable forum - 3mm would be an ideal choice if he actually wanted to undertake the role

Would only suggest a team of moderators if Si was getting overwhelmed by reported posts.

I think the only problem we may encounter with unlimited guest access is juveniles, mainly from up the road, being keyboard warriors. It does get slightly out of hand on some of the farcebook forums.

I would keep it like it is until the summer. I would recommend one or two mods just to keep it ticking, but this forum has started off brightly.

Would only suggest a team of moderators if Si was getting overwhelmed by reported posts. So far Ive removed two posts that were both reported. Just a straightforward remove post, no warnings or anything like that. Its important that people do use the report function as this forum has been so popular it would take me ages to get through all the new posts and scrutinise them, so I could easily miss them if they werent reported.

To allow guests to post without registering is a recipe for disaster IMO. I see the juveniles across the border have already made their presence felt so if this board is to have any credibility, registration and moderation is a must. All clubs require registration to post on their forums and on RP you can't even read the posts without being registered.

Can we not set up a separate guest forum like the one the old Devachat used to have?

If there's an offensive post press the report button and an admin or mod will deal with it, guest or no guest it'll be dealt with imo

A guest only section would work best imo. Just wait until we play Tranmere this place will be swamped by them.

It's commendable to give guests a go, but I think long term it will have to be reconsidered.
Apart from the pillocks likely to take advantage of it, I see there's someone on another thread pretending to be Devon Blue, which I don't think is very cool, to be honest.
That said, how do we know that anybody from the old Devachat is the same person being the same username on here? There may have been all kinds of identity theft during the switch!

If you need help I'm happy to do what I can, although these days I can't commit the time I once did to Devachat. I wasn't everyone's favourite though so won't take it personally if I'm voted down!

To let guests post on here without registering will encourage every dickhead on the planet to post. Mark my words, this forum will collapse within a couple of months unless registration is required.

Light moderation please. I want to be able to discuss a match with guests from our opponents. I don't even mind their views that we wouldn't agree with as Chester supporters, but not prepared to accept abuse and foul mouthed rants.
As others have said slightly heavier moderation after some games will be necessary.
But whether on this board or the older Devachat, on which I will remain a member, I want to have fun talking about Chester's footballing exploits and all that entails.
Well done for your initiative in starting this up.

I don't get all this panic about guests who haven't even turned up yet.
Let's just deal with it when or if it ever happens.
The old devachat is dead, move on guys!
If you see an offensive post from anyone just report it!

In my opinion your mods will get fed up with the offensive messages . On red passion allowing guests to comment just allowed people to chat offensive rubbish and after time became boring . I wish you good luck with your new forum and as a big fan of fans owned teams I will be popping "up the road" to see how you are getting on.
By the way .the transfer window thing was very quiet for you lot .are you happy with what you've got or just glad to keep the team who have done so well this season .

Another striker would be nice unless Akintunde's set for a return. Overall though our success this season has been based on faith in the current team. There are several players who look a lot better under McCarthy's management than they did last season.

I agree Dimps about the problems with offensive messages and I'm sure this will be realised sooner rather than later and registration will be required. as regards the transfer window, we are not going to get into the playoffs nor in the relegation spots (hopefully) so it would seem sensible to continue with the squad that has done us proud so far.
