What have they done to Elton? This new one must be an imposter! Different player. All did well tonight against a big, strong Tranmere team with a fair bit of experience.

Sounds like Elton’s having a worldie May have sounded like it, but didn't look like it. Apart from one excellent piece of tracking back, he didn't achieve much.

Calling it now start Elliott or Waring Saturday instead of the ineffective dudley then we have a chance anyway not my favorite thing the Cheshire cup but well done lads We'll need to see how bad their pitch is on Saturday. I reckon it will be almost impossible to play a passing game. It's been poor every time we've been there, AVFO says there's a Rugby League game on it tomorrow too. Going to be a scrap, rather than the beautiful game. May need to pick a side for the conditions. Glendon, Elton and Johnston may not be ideal midfield. I'd be surprised if at least one of Elliott and Waring didn't start.

A deserved victory for us tonight as we were more than a match for a surprisingly strong opposing side. It was a great workout for us as our fringe and youth lads all put in decent shifts, and it was a nice runout for them following ten days without any action. Tranmere Rovers didn’t quite live up to standards, as they weren’t effective on the ball and didn’t seem to want to win it. For the final 20 minutes they were knocking on the door, but our brilliant organisation prevented them from creating any openings. We can be really pleased with how we performed as we were a very well-drilled side who frustrated Tranmere a lot.
We were on top for much of the first period as we maintained the bulk of possession and were quite a dangerous side on the front foot. It was Tranmere Rovers who had the opening attempt though as Louis Gray did very well to tip a deflected Stefan Payne shot over the bar. At the other end George Waring went so close to netting against his former club, as he glanced a header wide from a Matty Waters cross. Stuart Crilly, who played an active role tonight, was the next to go close as a dipping volley went past the target. Our early pressure continued to show as a deft Danny Elliott effort was blocked off the line by George Ray, seconds after Elton Ngwatala was denied. Towards the midpoint of the half our early pressure was rewarded, as we were handed our first penalty in donkey’s years due to Stuart Crilly going down. Danny Elliott duly despatched to mark his return in the best possible way, as he coolly slotted in to make it 1-0 to us. The visitors then went close to responding as Evan Gumbs headed past the post, whilst Matty Waters fired wide on the approach to half time. With not long to go George Waring used his physicality really well, as he controlled the ball with his chest before smashing past the target. All in all a promising first half saw us deservedly lead at the break.
The second half wasn’t as action-packed with less goalmouth action, as our performance off the ball was much more effective than our performance on the ball. Tranmere Rovers had more possession, but we gave them a hard time as our strong backline stopped them from breaking through. Luke Pilling was immediately brought into action as he claimed a powerful Danny Elliott effort, whilst Matty Waters was the next to go close to doubling our lead as he struck a free kick over. Stefan Payne then broke through for Tranmere on what was a rare occurrence, but thankfully Louis Gray saved our blushes by pulling off a strong stop. Chances then died down for both sides as the ball spent more time near the centre circle, whilst one or two Tranmere players often made needless fouls to confirm their frustrations. To be fair to the visitors they had the majority of possession for the final 20 minutes, although despite us sitting back a tad too deep our no-nonsense play didn’t give Tranmere a chance. With moments to spare substitute Louis Hayes almost doubled our lead, but Pilling was there to parry his attempt out. We were made to work hard for our win at times, but a very committed display saw us deservedly march on in our first game in March.
Every single blue put in 100% effort tonight, and after a few blips lately you cannot fault their commitment tonight. Elton Ngwatala is my man of the match as he put in his best display to date. If he plays more like he did tonight then he will be a hit for us, as he had loads of freedom which allowed him to dictate our play. Jamie Morgan comes at a close second as he had Morgan Ferrier in his back pocket in that second half, as he didn’t let him have a single sniff which frustrated him a lot. He read the game so well by being at the right place at the right time to shield or clear the ball away when necessary. George Waring looked sharp on his return because he used his height very well to win the headers, which again intimidated Tranmere as they were at him for the whole game. He offers something most other centre forwards don’t have, and although he doesn’t score loads I am very glad he is back. Louis Gray may as well have brought a deckchair with him as he barely had a single thing to do, although when called into action he did make a couple of important saves. Plenty others more than played their part too.
I don’t usually feel too bothered about the Cheshire Cup, but now we are in the semi finals we are more than capable of winning the whole thing. It’s always nice to win some silverware, and given we beat a strong Tranmere Rovers team tonight, we can certainly beat Hyde United and whoever we could potentially be up against in the final (if we get there of course). Our next match is on Saturday as we play Bradford (Park Avenue) AFC away which will be much more important than tonight. This evening’s results have actually gone really well for us, so we simply HAVE to follow it up now otherwise their won’t be much point. Bradford are all but relegated so anything other than a positive result will be embarrassing, as we have to make up for our poor show against Brackley Town.

For one of the more balanced posters on here, you really just won't give Elton a chance, will you? Man. Of. The. Match. Waters should have been man of the match imo. Let's face it sometimes the man of the match decisions are strange. Maybe you're right about my view of Elton. To me he seems to show a few touches here and there, then disappears again. Bit of a Jordan Chappell type. Seen a load of them over the years. I'd be amazed if he goes on to have a decent career. Doesn't seem to have a position. Not a winger. Not a striker. Not really a midfield player. Doesn't create or get into the box to be a 10. I hope he proves me wrong, but don't expect he will.

Trampmere were out fought and out-classes. Our defence was solid and looked well drilled for a change. Jones has a good game so did both fullbacks. The visitors were poor and should be relegated based on their attitude.

Anyone who went have a comment on how Louis Gray did. Clean sheet which is encouraging but did he have anything to do?

Gray didn't have a lot to do really. In the first half he made an awesome one handed save from a deflected shot.

But didn't really have much to do. Adjusted well to a deflected shot first half. Blocked one straight at him, and tipped away a corner second half.

Since we beat Tranmere, who recently beat Watford, who recently beat Liverpool, who are top of the Premier League and European and World Club Cup holders, clearly that means Chester are the best team in the world.

Hyde United in the semi-final shouldn't be too taxing, I saw them struggle past Vauxhall Motors in their quarter-final. Warrington Town or Nantwich Town in the final is a different matter (they take this competition semi-seriously).

I see we had a top referee at the Tranmere game. What was he like? I’m impressed as he gave us a penalty.

May also be something to do with the Airport?

Great win and to keep a clean sheet against the likes of Payne and Ferrier (both prolific in the Conference) is a credit to the defence.
Chester v Nantwich at Warrington's ground would be a great final. Being in a compact ground like that should bring a great atmosphere.
