Do we have any scouts at the club ? A Stafford Rangers striker has just signed for Leicester and Arsenal signed a fullback from Hednesford, we need to be looking at these sort of players as there are gems out there if you look hard enough . There is a striker called Luke Benbow at Stourbridge who scores every week and only 24 years old , must be worth a look ? Better than signing weak academy players from higher leagues on loan.

Our scouting system involves McCarthy talking to a few old pals running academy sides and asking them if they have any players needing a game, current players offering mates that haven't got a club and if all else fails bringing back an old 'favourite'. A club like ours absolutely needs a scouting network of some description. Rather than watching DVD's of the opposition, which seems to make no difference to results, JM should be out watching players. Our very survival and ability to compete will depend on our ability to develop players and then sell them on - both through the academy and signing rough diamonds from levels below.

I don't know about this, is it realistic for a club with our resources to pay a member of staff just to go to games and compile reports on players? Seems a bit of a luxury when we can barely put together a squad of 20 players.
I would hope the coaches at the club are taking in other games when they get the chance and doing a bit of scouting alongside their roles. For example, if Iwelumo needs to be in London every weekend, could he be watching games and players down there? Alternatively, there are freelance scouts around I believe, doesn't Neil Young do it?

We managed to find the money to employ Tony Allen so I am sure we could afford a scout ! If we don't scout players how exactly do we recruit? Sign them off recommendation or just take a chance?

I mentioned two ways just then - get someone in the coaching staff to do a bit of scouting when they can, or pay a freelancer, effectively 'outsourcing' scouting. A full-time Chester FC scout would be very nice but these people need a wage and it just means even less to spend on the playing budget. Wouldn't disagree with you about Tony Allen, but that's been done and I'm pretty sure it wasn't anything to do with anyone on the current board.

It's vital that we have a scout put in place.

When Young was in charge, both he and Gary Jones did a lot of scouting. I think they were always at games looking at potential recruits and also had Alex Hay travelling up and down the North West. Unfortunately our Assistant probably knows a lot more about Anthony Lockhaert than he does about Anthony Barry so scouting is probably limited at the current time.

I think that's got to be the solution. Coaches who know the non-league game, have contacts and can scout players in their spare time. I honestly don't think we can pay somebody just to go and watch football matches. On another note, we have signed a decent number of players from lower league/grass roots in recent years, like Astles, Lynch, Richards and even Hughes, so it does suggest to me that some sort of system is in place even if it's not that visible or obvious.

McCarthy got Lynch from Bala, Akintunde from Histon, He offered Vassell terms before Walsall took him, He got Horwood from Northampton, Durrell from Telford and Roberts on loan from Walsall.
Albeit quite midlands-centric it does show he's got some connections. Mind you perhaps it was Sharps who made all the signings, he did everything else.
Player recruitment is massive for any manager.

A good scout will pay for themselves, and can be got in for expenses only in most cases. I know that Neil Young has offered to help the club as regards football structure, but believe he was told his help wasn't neccessary?
