Their 1944 White Paper, whilst making health care free(ish) for all would be funded through workers’ insurance schemes and local charitable fundraising, with no state involvement. My 85 year old Dad (soon to be 86, next week) was almost crippled by severe asthma and other respiratory illnesses in childhood, compounded by the fact that his family could not afford medication for him. He says the NHS was the greatest thing ever, as the necessary treatment was provided free of charge and his health improved immediately. Thank you Clem Attlee, Nye Bevan and the heroic 1945 Labour Government.

The Tories voted against the NHS creation 22 times.
It’s proud socialist Nye Bevan who created the NHS.

It was to be organised and funded locally, with the inevitable variations in standards geographically. They proposed no state involvement, so patently wasn’t a National service. Not a difficult concept surely?

I don't really care whose creation it was 72 years ago to be honest. There were probably politicians on both sides who played major roles, and straight after the war with a population to rebuild, it was no doubt a necessity.
More important is now. The NHS is just about the only thing I could go to another country and say I'm proud of, and there are certain people who are trying make it appear inoperable as an excuse for selling it. We must not allow it to happen.
