Seals?

Why do people refer to Chester FC as the Seals? That name was the winning entry in a competition in the local paper to give the old club a new nickname. As terrible as I have always thought it was it related to playing at Sealand Road. Since the move down Bumpers Lane it no longer has any relevance. I seem to remember "The Bumpers" was suggested after moving to the Deva Stadium, equally ridiculous.
What is wrong with The Blues or City. The Observer even referred to City in match reports. I remember when I first started watching Chester at Sealand Road in the 60's with chants of C-I-T-Y City long before it was officially added to the club's name in the 80's. I love it when away fans sing "You're not City anymore" and we reply with "City". We have always been City as Chester is a proud city whether in the name of the club or not.

I think ‘The Blues’ is just a bit boring and obvious, and with many other clubs such as Chelsea, Birmingham City, Everton, etc. having that nickname it’s nice to have a unique, outside-of-the-box one such as ‘The Seals’, which we can adopt as our own. I’m glad more people are calling us ‘The Seals’ now, especially on social media where ‘Up The Seals’ is plastered all over it because it just makes a change and gives us a different identity.

Unfortunately it isn’t a proud city when it comes to supporting its football team, hence the reason we are languishing at the rubbish level six of the football pyramid, in a rubbish location, at the end of a road just past the rubbish tip, and dumped just across the border, as if in some forgotten landfill site in Wales. Perhaps The Binmen would be more appropriate, with Dusty Bin as the mascot. At least as The Binmen we could always claim the visitors are rubbish!

I like it. It's unique. If you say 'Blues' to a football fan, they'll probably think of Chelsea or Everton. 'City' they'll think of Man City, but 'Seals' they'll think of Chester.
Yes, it's tenuous, but so are most club nicknames. Peterborough's nickname Posh comes from a quote from a manager nearly 100 years ago!

Blues and City are about the most generic and vague nicknames going. As others have said loads of other teams use them too. You want a nickname that is unique to your club really, and this one seems to have stuck with us.
If we'd have gone down this branding on day one of reforming, Martin may have leant towards a variant on the seals badge we had years ago? Either way I like the current badge and the seals one, so not really fussed.

I’d like to see Seals written in the seats to replace the CCFC.

The chant was always Come on City, when I started watching in the 70s, I only recall the seals nickname being on the program and club emblem.
It’s stuck though and much better than the generic ‘ blues’; though Come on City remains my favourite chant.
Always liked Yellows, away from home. Not seen us in green away, did we shout greens?

Maybe we could start selling inflatable seals in the club shop, that would raise the profile.Remember going to an away game years ago and seeing loads of Grimsby fans at a service station waving their inflatable fish.!!Funniest thing I’ve ever seen on the way to a match.

Perhaps The Binmen would be more appropriate, with Dusty Bin as the mascot. At least as The Binmen we could always claim the visitors are rubbish! It pains me to say ..but i think you are right. Apart from 1500 diehard fans and a few fair weather fans we are lucky to pull in 2,500 even when we are doing well. The majority of the population and the comerce of the city just don't give a toss about the club This was stated by Mark Lawrenson years ago, it caused outcry at the time but like it or not it is true A short extract from 'Rich v Poor' brings Lawros quote into perspective. And it’s not just Wrexham fans who question Chester’s support. When City were in turmoil under Terry Smith, the controversial American owner who briefly installed himself as team manager, Mark Lawrenson opined: “The trouble is that Chester is not a footballing city.” “There was an outcry over Lawrenson’s comments but ultimately, as much as it pains me, he was right,” says Jim Green. “We’ve a population of nearly 100,000 within the city yet cannot pull in 3,000 for a league game on a Saturday. I think the council and the city in general lack the passion of our counterparts in Wrexham – something I’m pretty envious of. Wrexham could pull in over 10,000 every week if they were doing well, and previously have done just that – something Chester will never dolink
