Assume you mean "why aren't we?".
I'm sure many clubs at our level are aware of players like these, but I guess the problem is when transfers fees are involved.
After the meteoric rise of Vardy and the like, every team in the land are now looking that little bit harder for the next rough diamond in non-league.

We have plenty of players signed from lower non-league clubs - Astles, Richards, Lynch, Mahon and even Durrell and Shaw. There clearly is some kind of scouting going on.
We could appoint a full-time scout, but as with everything that costs money, and would effect what we can spend on an already thin squad. Probably better that the existing staff do their bit when they can or we use a freelance scout as and when needed.

My question to Mark Maguire and Alan Povey for the Web chat today is based on scouting. If our (correct in my opinion) model is finding young players and developing them, some info on who is looking for them would be good.

He will do, but we should have somebody actively searching the WPL and Evostik as well as the released lists of FL clubs and Academies.

I think Shaw was signed from Alfreton when they were in our league, but yes we do have a few from down the pyramid and WPL.
Is it true that The Former Players Association offered to scout for free, but it wasn't taken up. Just asking!

They'd just gone down from the Conference, so yes I was pushing it a bit by including him. You could include Joyce and even Hughes, who was playing real grass roots football. I just think sometimes people are a bit quick to see a player being signed from the lower leagues and ask "why aren't we doing that?" when if they look carefully at our squad they will find that we are. You can't sign them all though, and neither is it wise to have a team without at least a few players with experience at this level.

Also these top lower league players are still very tough to compete for, with league sides like Fleetwood, Peterborough in particular seeming to like to go for them. For every 100,000 of these lad, you may get 1 that turns out to be a 'Jamie Vardy' and maybe 1,000 that go to play football league, but still a huge bunch of them will not cut the mustard. Look at Marsh for example, released by an academy, not seen anything of him to suggest he's good enough.

We haven't seen anything of him full stop! Most wasteful signing ever.
