An interesting article on football without headers, with the increasing numbers of ex footballers now suffering from or showing signs of Dementia is it only a matter of time before this becomes a reality. The article states football could become more skillful without them, does it just become 5 a side with 11 players, or does the game evolve and produce different tactics. I suspect the top end of the game will cope better than grassroots as we seem to rely on the hoofball. It is certainly something to dwell on as if the link between heading the ball and Dementia is proven then things will have to change. link

Football is a contact sport. What next? Why not ban tackling in case anyone gets injured,

I think most of the football related dementia is in players who used to play with the older, heavier balls. Nobby Stiles was the prime example and the poor fella even had to resort to selling his medals to pay for his care. That's not to say that it can't happen with the newer balls but time will tell.
Boxing is the main sport were this is prevalent, I can't wait until they ban punches to the face!

Football is the only sport where the ball makes regular contact with the head, but as has been said, today's footballs are very different. Alan Shearer apparently has no signs of dementia and even the 90s footballs were heavier than the ones now.
There is risk in all sport. Boxers punch eath other in the head, ice skaters wear blades on their boots and cricket ball is like a rock if it gets pelted at you. The benefits of playing sport outweigh the risks though.

Balls are no heavier now than they were in the 1960s/70s (14-16oz dryweight). What is different is that they no longer absorb moisture in the same way, so they don't become noticeably heavier during play.

What is different is that they no longer absorb moisture in the same way, so they don't become noticeably heavier during play. What is also different is that the balls of today seem to have a softer coating on the outside. Squeeze one and it feels like a spongy texture rather that just being hard and solid like the old style balls, which surely helps.

I agree with the ban at junior levels but it’s a joke if implemented into senior game

Maybe a return to the lighter Adidas ‘Jabulani’ is the way forward?

I see Spennymoor are taking part in a match where heading will only be allowed in the box in the 1st half and banned altogether in the 2nd tomorrow. Be interesting to see the reaction to this afterwards.

Oh right, sorry I thought they were playing in it - still be interesting to see how it affects the game, especially set pieces and corners.

One thing that concerns me is what would happen if the UK leagues decide to ban headers (even if just at youth level), but the rest of the world keeps them. This would surely be detrimental to young home grown players coming through and hoping to play at the highest level, as well as domestic teams in European competition and our home nations' chances on the world stage. I appreciate the argument that health should be the priority, but as others have said, when you have sports such as boxing and MMA still going, the dangers from heading a football would seem small in comparison.
Yes, there may be an increased risk of dementia, but then in plenty of other areas (fitness/training regimes/nutritional knowledge), the average footballer gets health benefits that may even things out compared to the rest of us (and that's a total guess on my part, not an evidence backed assessment!) I'm fairly sure that running around for 90 minutes on a Saturday afternoon is a fair bit healthier than filling your mouth full of pies, wine gums and warm Carlsberg, which is my usual fare.

I see Terry Butcher, who made a career out of throwing his head in the way of anything, is calling for heading to be phased out.
