Usually in the past when we've been crap, there's been somebody at the club to get really annoyed at. Whether it was Steve Vaughan, Terry Smith, Mark Wright, Mark Gutterman, there's been an effigy figure there that I can point my finger at and blame the situation on.
Right now, I don't see that. I just see honest people with good intentions really struggling to do their jobs, be they directors, managers or players. There's no fire in my belly. I just feel sad and helpless. I suppose this ties in with the thread about apathy someone posted not long ago.
Am I just getting a bit old and soft? Should I be more pissed off? It's one of the worst runs of form I can ever remember but there's no out and out bastard to blame for it. I'm sure when McCarthy inevitably gets sacked I won't be celebrating or gloating, I'll feel bad for the fella.
I've worked in places before where everyone's doing their best, but the company is failing. Is that what's happening here?

It is a bit of a strange, a bit like when we we’re coming up through the Evo-Stik leagues, letting players go who’d actually done well for us. Being cruel to be kind in a way, feels a bit awkward.
McCarthy is no bad guy, he’s a nice one who’s well intentioned, I actually want him to succeed. It’s difficult to know how to react to someone like that. I was standing there today angry but feeling the need to curb my anger, so ended up turning away from play a lot and looking down at the floor.

It is a combination of both anger and disappointment. But far worse is the apparent failure to listen to and respond to supporter's perceptions of what is going wrong from both McCarthy and his assistants on the one hand and the CFU Board and CEO on the other. In a fan-owned club the fans must be listened to because they are the owners! This is especially so when it is not the occasional nasty comment that needs to be responded to but a welter of many, long-suffering, caring and responsible CFU supporters and others who have been perceptively crying out very loudly for such a long time pointing out the errors, causes and remedies. It is now the Board's responsibility to take the unpalatable decision and if not, to at least tell and explain to the CFU membership why not! Silence from the CFU Board is no longer an option. The evidence for requiring action by them has been visible now for far too long. Respond to supporters observations now or lose them and cause further financial problems for OUR club.

There needs to be a lot more openness from the board. This can no longer be glossed over, as just a bad run. Looks like we will avoid relegation, only by the fact that there are 4 teams worse than us, but if the season had 4 games to go, we would be nailed on. I am not one for sacking manager's, but there needs to be some serious questions asked about the decline, since Christmas and possibly about McCarthy's future? If McCarthy cannot be sacked an experienced Director of Football needs to be brought in to over see the summer recruitment. The status quo is not an option.

I've worked in places before where everyone's doing their best, but the company is failing. Is that what's happening here? Lobster, I think your comments ring true for many of us. I have backed the current board and manager, partly because of the need for continuity at a club like ours - we cannot throw money at problems so we need prudence and commitment and work to meet our goals over a longer time frame. However the current run of results cannot go without changes and explanations. I am prepared to give Mark McGuire and the board the time they need to put in place their improvements and to a certain extent put this season down to experience provided we now make changes to arrest the slide on performances. in retrospect I think we have had a few bad decisions, despite some unfortunate injuries; the length of contract for Macca, not that he didn't deserve a new contract, but 1 year should have sufficed. Not letting Hughes go for the offer we had from Barnsley. Players always want to further their own careers and we need to back them and invest in new players. I am convinced this has contributed to a staleness in the way we play. Giving Iwelumo a part time role when we need full focus from every employee at the club. All has been done with the best intentions, but this season has to be seen as a failure. For next season if Macca is to stay we need a new Manager to whom he can be coach, who can be tougher with the team (Richards and George in mind here), play to our strengths (4-4-2 playing our best players in position) and buy and sell players to build this club rather than sign on known local lads Dawson, Marsh, Davies. As an absolute minimum the board need to come out with a thoroughly reasoned plan on how we are going to improve our core product, the team, for next year so we the paying customers enjoy and pay for the product. This in my mind needs a change in the squad, 50% turnover in players, if only to get rid of the taint of this year, a change in the football management team and a SMART set of objectives in the business improvements so we know when to expect the increased cash flows and how much; not just in the pipeline.

Sack him, and bring in a new manager and assistant manager , with a contract that is performance based and for one year with an option of another year ! In the long run it is the cheapest option because if we keep Bill and Ben we have no club to support . All this crap about him being a nice man and he needs time, I agree he needs to do time for robbery of a managers salary !

Its down to the board or whoever put us in this crazy situation, to use whatever emergency funds we have and or any transfer fees we receive, but in the meantime put him on gardening leave ! He will drag this club down and down the longer he stays, and he has to go now before he starts giving new improved contracts to present players ! He has no idea how to manage a club, he has had 12 months as manager and 2 years before as assistant manager, enough is enough !!

What Bignot achieved at Solihull on resources far less than ours was outstanding. The fact he is on the market should be sharpening the thinking of our esteemed CEO and the board. Of course it isn't as easy as to just show JM the door and drop Bignot a call, we all know that. However, the real issue when Burr was sacked was that there was no one out there with the credentials to move the club on. Wasn't the shortlist Watson, Carden and then McCarthy? Let's be honest, none of them were inspiring choices, but JM got the job based on those final three games.

The one thing I will say is there was a CFU meeting last week and no-one went. It irritates me no end when people say the fans are not being listened to when the haven't even bothered attending the meeting to make their points or even sent an email to fans@ they've just vented their spleen under a silly moniker on here.
It was my apathy thread you are talking about Lobster, essentially the on pitch drama has been a godsend for glossing over the never ending pipeline and utter nothingness coming from a possibly overstretched but board bereft of ideas other than plodding along watching the bottom line.
I wish more people would just take a step back back, look at the situation and appreciate that nothing is achieved shouting from the sidelines.
For what it's worth I don't think sacking macca is the right way forward. I agree with Billyw the economic argument that he will cost season tickets in the hundreds is not made out. He can turn this around in my view but he desperately needs a bad cop, and it is essential any new assistant is able to attend matches. So, short term the change should be made at assistant level. The CEO needs to sit down with macca and be honest and say "we back you but you need a proper FT assistant like sharps, irrespective of how good a coach Iwelumo is".

Absolutely crazy, if a manager in any buisness or sport can not hack it , get rid , end of story !! Can you not see , he will never be a manager as long as he has a hole in his bum!

Let's be honest it doesn't matter who gets the job they will fail we have no money to compete in this league it simply is impossible and each year the teams are more and more financially better off than us. Crowds falling so in fact our income is reduced while everyone else's is getting bigger so there isn't a manager in the country who could make us successful.. we are in the wrong league conf north is our standard in the yr 2017 maybe lower in 5 yrs without outside investment.. people say we don't want a auger daddy well shut up moaning then because this is the life you have to deal with now.

Entirely agree with what Andy says in respect of getting in a committed assistant, Iwelumo's absences just send out the wrong message about his commitment and I'm sure this impacts on the players attitudes even if at a subconscious level. As for attendees at the CFU meeting, there was a reasonable turnout but as Andy says those who want to vent their spleen don't, won't, are unable or ineligible to a trend. There was plenty of disquiet over the first teams performances and opinion on the abilities of Jon McCarthy being aired in conversations amongst attendees. Given that the meeting was first and formost a business review about the CFU as opposed to 1st team football, and people are perhaps naturally reserved about standing up and being highly critical in a public it is never likely to be a forum for calling for the head of the manager.

Firstly unfortunately I cannot see that we have any other realistic option but to terminate Jon's employment at the club. I said before xmas that I felt our form was entirely due to Sharps. There appears evidence to support that now sadly. I agree that we were not flush with options when Macca was appointed. To say getting Bignot in isn't realistic? He worked at Moors without a contract to the best of my knowledge throughout his time there. He has a record of having had some success on a smaller budget. Would he want to join us? We should certainly try and ask the question.

Should it be decided by the board that a change in 1st team manager is required, and I am still in 2 minds about that, then Marcus Bignot might seem a likely contender, however most of his success has been at levels lower than conference national, and he has obviously not come up to expectation at Grimsby for whatever reason. Perhaps his successor at Solihull Moors who has kept them in the conference national, managing a squad he largely inherited, would be equally interesting. But please lets not go down the Shaun Reid route in any capacity, a recipe for absolute disaster. Passionate he may be, but no track record at all, and likely to end up as a public relations disaster.

I've read several interviews he gave during his time at Solihull. They did have a budget increase during this season they went up - that was due to the £100,000 they made off the Omar Bogle sale. All self sufficient and exactly the kind of model we need to be working too. If we bring players in, develop them and sell them on, then we can increase the budget given to that manager.
