I watched the match against Germany and was shocked by what I saw. the usual ultra- cautious 'let's not let a goal in' negative stuff Southgate continues to put on display is starting to drive me mad. Yes we scored 3 in the second half to paper over the cracks against a tiring German side. We played 3 at the back (that turned into 5 at the back more often than not) against a bang average German side. We came back from 2 down, a position that was of our own making. Now I and everyone else can see that Harry Macguire is not the player he was, not getting a game for Man U for this very reason. Southgate continues to pick him! He (Southgate) is not doing Macguire any favours picking him because his confidence is completely shot, he's scratching around trying to improve, his form is gone and he should not be going to the world cup (but he will be). Dyer dosen't look too good either not I'm convinced by him (I hope Stones is OK for Qatar) there is a reason why Dyer was not picked for England for over 2 years, which is; Southgate thought he was not good enough so why is he good enough now? Luke Shaw in place of Alexandra Arnold? really? Then there is Nick Pope not international class by a long way. What we had was Southgate playing the same players whatever the consequences and paying the price for it. What he should have done is to give as many of the fringe players a run out as he could, have a look see if any of them can do a job. That chance has now gone. My feeling is that the squad that played over these two games is the squad that will be going to the world cup (with a couple of additions) and sadly the squad is not good enough and my feeling is that we won't get out of the group stage.

I tend to agree with whoever it was (possibly Si) who said on here that we probably need to change the manager after this World Cup whatever happens. Ultimately, Southgate should be judged on tournaments and you can't really argue with what he's done there, but there are signs of things starting to get a bit stale.
You'd have to say that until this year, Maguire has always played well for England. Like most players though, he's been poor in this Nations League campaign. I don't think he should be playing for England right now.
It would be a colossal failure not to get out of a group containing Wales, Iran and the USA though. I can't see that happening.

I think even if England win the World Cup then I'd still be in favour of a change of management. Southgate is a nice enough guy and in tournaments he has got us further than what we have for years, but I think the team needs some fresh impetus with certain players out of form or getting on a bit, and a need to bed in emerging talents. Southgate is loyal to players who have done well for him, and I get that, but his loyalty is blinding him and will be the undoing of him. I've never been convinced he's known the best system to accommodate players and I think tactically he is a cautious manager which does not suit the squad at his disposal.
In terms of the World Cup, we should have more than enough to get past Wales, USA and Iran but we've clearly lost confidence against the top teams and I don't fancy us to make it past last 16 this time around. Would love to be proven wrong - at least players will be fresher than what they normally are going into a World Cup, but so will everyone else.

His insistence on caution is so frustrating. I get that he doesn't want us to lose, none of us do, but the negativity cost us the Euros final and will cancel out such good talent as Foden and Bellingham. Let them go and express themselves ffs.

Zero interest in England, vastly overated players and an uninspiring cautious manager. Harry McGuire is an accident waiting to happen

Southgate said ages ago that tournaments are won by passive teams. He's probably right. France, Italy and even Brazil these days, tend to keep it tight and rely on the skilful players to create enough to win. We are just set up to get Kane chances. The rest aren't really a goal threat. Sterling did have a run of goals in the Euros. Foden isn't really a threat. Only having the 2 central players makes it difficult to press aggressively. So we end up sitting in. Can't see Wales or Iran doing much except sitting back and breaking at us. The group games could be a dreadful and nervy watch. Luckily Chester are still playing, so we'll have some football to watch while the World Cup is on!

Here's a depressing thought - by birth, Erling Haaland is English.

Don’t get started on national team cricket players

Don’t get started on national team cricket players 😀. You’re not making a reference to a specific country who, for convenience, think that being Scottish, South African, or Irish qualifies them to be their captain.
