So, could have Scunthorpe and York in NLN next season. Good reason to go up. Nah hope they stay up so we can have proper games. Send the likes of Dorking, Bromley, Eastleigh down…

Can’t see Scunthorpe getting out of it after losing to Torquay yesterday. One of those games where whoever lost would seem doomed.
It won’t get much attention because they were a traditionally non-league club, but the speed of Yeovil’s descent down the leagues has been pretty alarming. They went up to the Championship a decade ago and are now in serious danger of getting relegated into the National League South.

Yes, if they go down, they'd have gone from the Championship to the NL South within 10 years, which is even quicker than Stockport managed the same descent. Scunthorpe too were playing in the Championship as recently as 2011. They must have been an awful team to support in recent years. Their last four league finishes are 23rd, 20th, 22nd and 24th, and currently 23rd this season. As things stand, three very Southern teams are going to be relegated from the NL, so they will probably need to shift a few teams from the NLS into the NLN. They need to do something about this I think. A regional league shouldn't have everything from Blyth, to King's Lynn to Gloucester in it, and it's only going to get worse. Getting ahead of myself, but IF we go up it would be a shame to lose Torquay and York, even if York's not the day out it used to be. I hate Gateshead's ground and we never get anything there, but it's not a bad day out. Dorking is the main one I could do without - they seem like the AFC Fylde of the South - but they look safe. Looks like Rochdale are going down to the NL, which always seems a "proper" ground. A bit of a shame as I think they've been a great example of what a small club can do over the last two decades. They never seem to be in any financial trouble either.

Looking at the potential promoted sides from the two feeder leagues - South Shields have more or less wrapped up the Northern Premier League Premier Division title, and currently the playoff places are occupied by Bamber Bridge, Warrington Town, Radcliffe and Gainsborough with Hyde just outside on goal difference and Marine four points further back.
The Southern League Central Division provides the other two promoted sides - and that’s a little closer at the top. Coalville Town are two points clear of Tamworth with a game in hand whilst Leiston in third place are only three points off the top. Rushall Olympic and Nuneaton are the other two sides in the playoff places with a nine-point cushion.
Title winners promoted to the NLN and it’s a more “normal” playoff of second vs fifth and third vs fourth before a final.

The Southern Fylde will always be Boreham Wood. That lot are like Fylde on steroids!

Scunthorpe are set to close their academy system and the first team will train in Ilkeston (70 miles away) to cut costs. They were in League One four years ago, will almost certainly be in the NLN next season.

So a 140 mile round trip and training the players are going to love that it also makes you wonder what costs they must have if thats going to save money

A lot of the players possibly live in Manchester and Leeds?
Takes away a lot of that local feel though. I love the thought our players travel to the city to train. Hated the thought of them training on random 3Gs around Mcr under B&J.

Clearly Ilkeston is considered a central location for their squad. It'll be like Barrow training in Manchester for the same reason.

Thats quite possible, though I wonder how many will stay if they do drop also if money is that tight they might have to consider going part time which would make recruiting and training difficult

He thinks that the chairman is a bit of a dodgy character and he can see things going badly wrong next season!

Not sure if it's been posted elsewhere but I see that Askey has just guided Hartlepool to back to back wins including 4-1 away at Grimsby

York were beaten 3-0 at home by Halifax today. They have a six pointer at Torquay next weekend and have to go to Notts County on the last day.
I hope they go down. Harsh on the fans but idiot chairmen like that deserve to feel the full consequence of their behaviour.

Askey is tasked with keeping Hartlepool in the FL now. Just climbed out the drop zone today, but it’s tight at the bottom with Crawley, Harrogate and Colchester all down there too.
Rochdale look doomed.

Rochdale look doomed. Suspect the damage has already been done, but Rochdale have taken seven points from their last three games since Jim Bentley was sacked to at least give themselves an outside chance of survival. I’m not sure where his managerial career goes from here really, having been shown the door by Fylde and Rochdale in little more than a year.
