Next season's National League will see six play-off spots. 2nd/3rd straight to semis, rest to play a qualifying round.

Good news I suppose. Anyone can finish 7th with a bit of luck and it means there's more to play for. I still think three-up three-down is long overdue for this division though.

Its an experiment on our league to see if it works I reckon, Going into the last weekend this season, there were loads of dead rubbers, with leagues won/lost and most relegation spots filled. Its just another way of pandering to the likes of Sky and BT as if it is a success it will be introduced right up to the championship, you mark my words. Never been a fan of the play offs and this just adds to the whole sorry story, how can a team who finish second, not be promoted but a team in seventh can. Bonkers

Where is the logic in Tranmere missing out on promotion to a team that finished 9 points below them.

I can never really make my mind up about playoffs. They are unfair but the season would be dead for loads of clubs without them. Anyone remember our first season in the Conference when it was only the champions who went up? It was obvious from the first few weeks that we were a top half club but couldn't compete with Rushden or Yeovil so we were basically playing out the season.
There should be an advantage for finishing higher though. Perhaps make them one leg at the higher placed team's ground?

The league system should be based on how good you are over a complete season not how good you are over a couple of extra games at the end of it. The playoffs need scraping completely as they are just another way TV has ruined our game.

Under this new system, they can now lose out to a team Who finished 20 points behind them instead Also think the Wembley final should be scrapped and the team that finished highest in the league should be at home for the final.

For years the Conference authorities have been arguing that the most important thing is to achieve 3 (or even 4) up and down to the Football League. How does this idea strengthen the case for more promotion places? In my opinion the Conference Board should put their own house in order and take the moral high ground with the EFL. The way to achieve this is to have 3 up and 3 down between Conference National and National North and South. In addition, they should offer the 3 step 3 leagues (4 from August 2018) 3 up and 3 down to Conference North and South. Once achieved this would leave the Conference/EFL relationship as the odd man out in the top 8 tiers of English football and more likely to change.

Once achieved this would leave the Conference/EFL relationship as the odd man out in the top 8 tiers of English football and more likely to change. That would mean you'd have to relegate six teams from the Conference as there would be three each coming up from the two leagues below. Unless you mean three up from the North and South leagues combined, which would only make it even harder for teams to get promoted from that level. If you've got two leagues feeding into one, you have to limit the number of promotion places or you'd end up relegating half the division. The Conference to League Two transition has no such problems and there's no reason why three up three down can't be introduced.

I'm sure many CFC fans dream of going to Wembley but I would rather have a fair system in place so that deserving clubs get promotion and not ones who get lucky or play well for one match.

All that will happen is the bank rolled clubs will chuck even more money at it in the hope of getting through via the play offs

However, purely from the point of view of a Chester fan, it's more imaginable that we might be able to fluke a 7th-placed finish than a 5th, even though both seem a long way off at the moment. I know we're not going to finish anywhere near 5th or 7th next season, but I'm talking about future seasons.

In this week's NLP, the editor is making the case for playoffs at the bottom of the division between the teams that finish between 4th and 7th bottom. He specifically mentions us in his argument, noting the very poor end to the season we had and whether it might have been different had we still been in serious danger.
Think it's a ridiculous idea myself. A team shouldn't be relegated for finishing 7th from bottom.

A team finished 7th can be promoted with maybe 30 points less than 2nd.

Surely without the play-offs, any hopes of promotion to the FL are non-existent for clubs like Chester. We definitely do not have the finances to challenge for a top 3 finish even if it was a 3 up 3 down system.

The league we are in is arguably the most difficult league in the whole pyramid to get out of nowadays with all the relegation money and sugar daddies.
