Anyone else genuinely scared that Macca doesn't really have a scouting network or decent level of contacts? We seem to be linked with or sign an awful lot of players without a great deal of thought or imagination to it. Granted, we may resign Joyce, Chapell & George as we cannot afford any better but maybe it's because Macca doesn't know of any better options/have any other targets in mind?

There is a scout that I know of but he is a volunteer. He does have football background and works with a well known football clubs academy for a living. That said I don't know of anyone else. I presume that he does a lot himself and asks contacts.

We do need a scout, especially with Macca doing the work all on his own because we can't sign players who can't play/have no experience.

Macca's scouting system involves phone calls to Port Vale and Stoke, asking if they have any kids needing a game and a sift through the list of previous players. Outside of that it's giving drop outs from Conference North sides a short term deal.

Before promotion to the National League we were able to snap up anyone we wanted, and there were plenty of 1/2 game wonders in the first few seasons. He had an easy job. Once we got to the Conference/National League the players brought in were shocking and the squad in that 2013/14 is the worst squad we've had since reform (Heath, Linfield, Jarrett, Harrison, McIntyre, Reed to name a few). I'm sorry but I can't see any evidence to suggest he was a fantastic scout.

Harrison would make my worst-ever Chester X1 and Jarrett was just a lazy so and so.

Scouting is iIMO one of the most important jobs in a club , having a good scout who can pick up players and see there potential is so important to small clubs . Anyone can pick a older seasoned pro up and offer big wedge of cash to get him to sign, but to have the ability to go out night after night in all weathers and pick up young lads who have fallen through the system is a rare talent and unfortunately not someone we or most lower league clubs could afford , unless they were a young scout looking to make his way and being given a chance by a club like ours.

Think he got a couple. He was shite for us even got sent off on his debut. Fair play to him for the racecourse game though.
