Reading news of the Falcon and the Lock Vaults reopening soon, as well as that rather jocular thread about the bagatelle table, has made me realise that there perhaps isn’t enough discussion on here about what is surely a shared interest for most of us.
Consider this thread the new home for any news, stories, grumbles or wisecracks about the drinking institutions in our city and beyond. What are your favourite (and least favourite) pubs in Chester, or wherever you live? Where are the best and worst pubs you’ve been to on an away day?

Strange one right by Brackley's ground that just seems like someone's house. Not really a "pub" but we had a few bottled ales there.
I like the Schooner by Gateshead's ground. Good beer, friendly vibe and indie/rock music in there last time I went.
FCUM's ground has an interesting place near it with loads of old NME and Melody Maker pictures all over the walls.

I was in Nottingham today, and stopped for lunch at the Bell - one of the oldest pubs in the city, but now owned by Greene King. Wonderful, historic building and a cracking selection of ales, but I couldn’t help feeling as though its character had gone some way towards being tarnished by the attempts of its custodians to convert it into a generic ‘chain’ pub - Sky Sports on the telly, inane R&B music blaring over the speakers, fruit machines, sticky tables and awful, greasy food. Made me glad that the big companies have failed to get their claws into most of the pubs in the centre of Chester (or, when they have, they’ve done them up quite tastefully for the most part), and that there are enough trendy bars to cater to the youngsters and the young at heart, allowing us miserable sods to be left in peace.

We walked in the Brackley pub a few years ago after a heavy night the night before. When it was pissing down all day. Absolutely bladdered and the owners had a laugh with us. Like the Schooner too. Bizzare pub at Hereford a coach load of us went to years ago. Had about 20 parrots in the back garden all shouting who’s a a pretty boy then.

We did a bit of a session in Chester on Saturday starting at the Deva Tap (great selection of beer and decent chicken burger which I had to buy as it was called Deva FC). Disappointed that the Olde Cottage opened at 14:00 (it was 13:30) so went the Stanley Arms for one...or would've done until I took one look at the selection of carbonated piss they had on offer, and left.
Harkers - well kept beer, nice atmosphere when it's cold/miserable outside. Cellar - I could stay all day but it's a toss up which would give up first: my wallet or liver. Cornerhouse - I liked it in there but we only stayed for one. That Beer Place - mind boggling amount of beer in there but again you'll pay a premium

Top 3 pubs in Chester:
Square Bottle - Don't care if it is a Wetherspoons, what a place to start a night out
Commercial - Mentally prepare yourself for Rosie's in there, genuinely love the place
Music Tap - Not a proper pub, but I don't care what a place

The above post was so bad that it killed off the entire thread, but I’ll try and resurrect it by sharing my experiences from Tamworth, which must surely rank as one of the best towns in the country when it comes to the number of quality pubs relative to the overall size of the place. Managed to sample a couple of cracking ones today, beginning with the Tamworth Tap - reigning two-time CAMRA pub of the year, and it’s easy to see why. Absolutely heaving in there, but incredibly well-maintained, with each of its three floors having a distinct character, and an impeccable selection of ales from various Midlands breweries. We also went to the Market Vaults, directly opposite - a lovely old-fashioned Joule’s establishment which, far from being overshadowed by its more famous neighbour, was also doing a pretty roaring trade. I know it was a Saturday, but it’s nice that the pub business in Tamworth appears to be doing so well (the Tap are even having to open a beer garden to accommodate the demand!) and I’ll certainly look forward to my return if by some miracle we end up going up alongside them.

Was thinking what beers do you not see anymore, at least in pubs?
What happened to Kronenbourg? Used to be the go-to higher-end lager in most pubs, better than Fosters and Carling, not quite as head-fucking as Stella. Seems to have lost that market to the likes of San Miguel, Moretti and Madri. Can't remember the last time I saw it anywhere.
I used to drink Caffrey's a lot when I first started going to pubs, mainly because it was cheap but it tasted alright. Somewhere between a mild and a stout, definitely not as heavy as Guinness but with a similarly gloopy head. That seems to have vanished. Can't remember seeing many of the old-fashioned bitters like Tetley's or Worthington's for a while. John Smith's still just about hanging in there.
Feels like people are drinking better beer now, which is a good thing I suppose. It's probably because booze is now so expensive, you might as well spend a little bit more and treat yourself than pay a fiver for a pint of shite.

Kronenbourg is making a comeback to be fair, think its part of Coors lot and its coming with a new shaped glass
Think the problem is fads, We had the Italian Lager fad now its the Spanish with Cruz, Madri on top of Estrella and SM.
I do miss different pub offering different lagers but all are pretty much tied to Carlsberg/Coors contracts now

Before I moved out of Chester I used to use pubs local to the area I lived in, so it goes like this. The highfield blacon, the ermine Hoole, the peacock and the cherry orchard Boughton, main town pubs were kings arms kitchen, odd fellows, Shropshire, coach and dixies not forgetting the Labour club. Mainly bitter drinker but do like cafferies and beamish.
