Heartbreaking to see a professional sportsman killed in a freak accident during a game in which 8,000 people attended.
Thoughts are with the player's family and friends, the Nottingham Panthers community and also everybody connected with their opponents Sheffield Steelers - their player must feel absolutely awful.
For anybody who doesn't know, Johnson was playing for the Panthers against the Steelers on Saturday when he collided with a Steelers player who was upended and whose skate blade catastrophically sliced Johnson's throat. Eye-witnesses said they'd never seen such a huge amount of blood at a sporting event. The game was immediately abandoned.
A number of other UK hockey games were postponed yesterday as a mark of respect.
Oxford City Stars, who former footballer Petr Cech is registered to play for, have announced an immediate clause that all of their players and rink-side staff must wear mandatory neck guards in the wake of the fatal accident. They are calling on other clubs to adopt the policy too. I'll be honest, I'm surprised this hasn't been mandated previously by the sport's governing bodies - it can be a dangerous sport.

Awful and not the first time it's happened. I remember seeing a clip of a goalkeeper whose neck was slit during a game. He was alright I believe but it was a gruesome sight and not a clip I would want to see again.

Awful tragedy.
As well as Chester FC, I also have a season ticket for Deeside Dragons IHC and the one scant consolation seems to be the way the whole ice hockey community, as well as other sports, have pulled together.
Sad to see that the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) have fallen short in mandating neck guards. Even following Johnson's death, they are still only making the wearing of guards 'advisory'. We played an Away/Home double header against the Nottingham Lions last weekend (who play at the same arena as the Panthers) and there were maybe 5 or so neck guards worn amongst the 30 odd players.

Knew this was coming due to the reported long ongoing police investigation and the police wanting to study video footage…
The Sheffield player has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

I was initially surprised as it seemed like it was at first accepted as a "freak accident" with even his club using those words. Reading comments though it does seem like quite a few people in the sport think it was irresponsible at best. Haven't seen the video myself and nor do I wish to.

Seen it enough times to be able to tell it was a deliberate move. Also read plenty of reports to suggest it was a signature move of his.
