Off to Oxford. Reported fee of £400k! Do we have a sell on clause?

He joined Stoke from us and then was released and went to Cheltenham, so it seems unlikely.

Always rated the lad. Playing mens football on loan at Stylebridge, at 18 and was MOM. Can see him playing at least at Championship level.

Surprised if he went for that amount, but typical that that well miss out on any fees for a player that we developed.
I think that In the Wales, grass roots clubs receive fees for players if they are sold on further down the line. Shame we don’t have something similar at our level.

The local papers round Stoke seem to be making a big thing about the sell on money due to them. Completely missing the fact that they let him go for £20k rather than keeping, developing and playing him, when they'd have got the £400k less our share.

Stops clubs taking a chance on them. Few younger lads in the WPL getting peanuts who would benefit from a move to Chester, Alty etc but end up stagnating at Airbus or Flint because of this rule. Its £1000s.

Still think this lad was sold too cheaply. it was obvious he would play at a decent level. Galling that Stoke get the sell on fee when we developed him. Far better to get our promising young players on long contracts

Far better to get our promising young players on long contracts We don't seem to have much luck with sell on fees. Jon Walters, Ben Heneghan, Sam Hughes and now Goodwin all spring to mind. Don't think we got a penny for various reasons down the years. Have we ever got a sell on fee? Problem at our level, imo, is that clubs tend to snap up any promising young players much quicker than in the past, for quite low fees, then spit them out. They are willing to take the risk on raw talent (of all ethnicities) rather than develop their own players. They save on academies etc, so can be more speculative. Goodwin, for example, barely played for us.

His move to Swansea was more on the back of what he did here than at Bradford. I was hopeful we would get one for Sarcevic but he seemed to find his level at L1 and L2. I think our sell-on fee for Walters went to HMRC! It would've been a nightmare if Vaughan had got his mitts on that.

Collins is a good shout. Looks like we sold him to Sunderland for 140k and he went to Stoke for 2.75m. Yes, HMRC got the 200k sell on fee for Walters. Heneghan is the one that irks me...we messed up badly there and Motherwell effectively pinched him for nothing, I believe, with no sell on clause by exploiting some loophole. Was Sarcevic still under contract when he left us?

I think with Collins we accepted a straight cash deal, which needless to say meant we missed out on more money further down the line.
We did have clauses in the deal for Sarcevic and got something when Fleetwood got promoted while he was there.

I remember Neil Young being furious that Danny Williams was able to leave for Inverness CT on a free as well, although I can't remember what the specifics were.

Typical that with Collins the one time sell-on fees would've benefited us, we didn't agree any! Pity the Ian Rush transfer came before the days of sell-on fees and performance-related add-on fees, or we'd have been minted throughout the 80s and early 90s.

We only had him on loan from Kendal and when we tried to make it permanent at the end of the season I think the Board dawdled despite NY being very clear he wanted him and Inverness swooped in.

I hope that we’re being a bit more savvy with this sort of thing now. It won’t happen often but we need to be maximising every chance we can.
On that note it is really good we’ve got Burke on a long term deal. Hopefully pays off for both us and him in the future.

Far better to get our promising young players on long contracts How was he sold too cheaply? He was sold at the going rate for a completely unknown quantity of a 17 year old who had played less than a dozen senior games in the NLN. The scenario where we as a club asked for more, scuppering a deal that would take the lad back to the club he supported as a lad and denied him his opportunity would ruin our reputation with young players. Its gutting that we aren't getting 20% of £400k, but I'm sure whatever we do get will be used correctly. As for getting promising young players on long contracts, that is easier said than done. The club have done well to get Burke tied down but these young lads have agents who will have pound note eyes.

On the plus side didn't we get something like £500k for Sam Hughes? Great player for us and a solid Lg 1/2 but think we did well there. Obviously unlucky with injuries but never saw him as a Premier League player. On Heneghan, what happened was nothing short of disgraceful. Looking back, he was attracting interest from Championship clubs in March 2016, which would have earned us a small fortune. The rules that allowed him to go to Scotland for nothing shafted us big time and, arguably, how is a small club supposed to know loopholes like that? Good signing by the often maligned Steve Burr, btw.

One of the players to leave was another talented 17yr old. Although he was highly rated, the club somehow failed to pay his wages for a period of time, thus invalidating his contract as his dad explained ,"we wrote to Hereford United and put in 14 days’ notice due to a breach of contract and we did not hear anything from them". The player was now a free agent and signed for Hull City. Fast forward to 2020, with the player entering his last year under contract the club knew now was the time to cash in, and cash in they did. On the last day of the January transfer window Hull City sold the player - Jarrod Bowen, to West Ham for a reported fee in excess of £20 million. So not only no transfer fee but no 20% cut from his move- a cool £4 million or more.

Watched the lad at loan at Sylebridge Celtic at Atherton Colleries when scouts from Blackburn Blackpool etc were looking at him. He may not have played many games under B and J but he was known and was attracting a good deal of interest prior to the Stoke City move.

The lad only wanted to go to Stoke, the club his family supported. Players attract scouts all the time, and Will was well known but the deal was good for the lad at the time, and the club got a fee they were happy with. Will had been in Stokes academy previously, they knew him. Compare it to Sam Hughes. £125k we got for a 20 year old who had played over 60 first team games and captained the side. Wills was a youth signing of a 17 year old. Worlds apart, and the fees correctly reflect that.

We’re just destined to never profit from a sell on aren’t we? I remember when Heneghan left on a free to Motherwell, Sheffield United signing him for £500k the next year, just sums it up!
Goodwin had all the physical attributes but wasn’t sure he was a proper goal scorer but fair play to the lad
