Anything else, i imagine will be squad players/competition for places. The starting 11, if everyone stays fit, looks much better than i personally expected when the season ended. It's all about what happens on the pitch though, a good start to the season would be nice as it feels like we always get hammered! (Perhaps i'm still having nightmares about Barnet) |

Happy with this signing. Always liked him against us, a good aggressive rugged centre half perfect for this league. The only worry with him and Astles is the lack of pace, and that's why Astles and Hughes worked best as Hughes could provide that burst of pace to cover for Astles, but at least nothing is getting past them in the air and I don't see either of them getting bullied. Its another really solid signing, and really encouraging the McCarthy is signing some proper men who are seasoned at this level rather than young lads. Of course it's nice to have a mix, but there's no doubt that we relied too much on youth last season and eventually it showed. The area that badly needs attention is the midfield, we need a couple of proper ball players in the middle who have got the legs to play for 90 mins and put their foot in.

Ross Hannah brings to the table the work ethic that should be replicated the whole way through the team as well. It must be great for midfielders to see their striker closing down the ball and hounding defenders in possession. I expect a lot of turnover in play in the centre of midfield IF we can get it right with a new signing there. |

I don't think Hughes is particularly quick. In the long run I think his lack of pace will prevent him from becoming a top class centre half. At our level good organisation and positioning is the key - that was why Hudson was such a liability. |

Great signing. He has football league experience and I've heard from a few Port Vale fans that he will do really well for us. Another superb signing and well done to Jon McCarthy. Saying that though, I really fear for Macclesfield next season. They are losing all of their good players and Kingsley James will be next I reckon. However, I think we need to snap up a couple of midfielders next, along with a right-back and a left-back.
