Anyone following the African Cup of Nations?
A surprising tournament so far with some of the traditionally bigger powers like Ghana, Algeria and Tunisia going out at the group stage while nations like Cape Verde and Equatorial Guinea are topping groups. Hosts Ivory Coast could also be going out this evening although they may sneak through as one of the best third placed teams.

Watched Nigeria v Ivory Coast. (I think) and it was the worst game I’ve ever seen. Turned off after 50 minutes.

The standard isn't great a lot of the time. Strange when there's no doubt Africa has some great players. I've only really been watching highlights.
Don't think third-place teams going through helps the competition. Ivory Coast ended up going through in third place with three points and a -3 goal difference. You're basically through if you win one match.

Huge drama tonight, with the man in my profile picture helping hosts Ivory Coast - who infamously sacked their manager after the group stage after ostensibly being knocked out, only to end up going through as one of the best third-placed sides - to a penalty shootout victory over holders Senegal, the only side to have won every group game. With most of the big teams already out, could the Ivorians now go on to sensationally win the whole thing?

Didn't realise Ivory Coast sacked their manager, that's an interesting development. Probably between them and Morocco now. Disappointed Equatorial Guinea went out as they'd been an exciting surprise package.
Still think it's a joke third-placed teams going through. Not sure why they don't just expand this and the Euros to 32 teams as it's the same number of games per team.

Anyone but the real micronations can give bigger teams a game. The quality of AFCON seems poor anyway so don't think it would make any difference.

For all the upsets we’ve seen in this competition, the finalists are arguably the two strongest teams in the tournament on paper - Nigeria surely have to be favourites, especially after having already beaten the hosts once in the group stage, though their performance against a rather limited South African side didn’t exactly set pulses racing.

If anyone is wondering - i am a sentient section of the racing post displaying the runners that will be charging around the Catford dog track (now defunct).
The rest of you I consider to be frauds and this new information has now rendered my Deva-Chat experience somewhat hollow.

Enjoyable final, if a bit short on quality and played on an awful pitch. Great scenes in the stadium. Ivory Coast deserved winners but you've got to question a tournament format that allows a team that lost two out of three group games, including a four goal thrashing, to progress and go on to win the final.

I, Danny Elliott, have become the first Devachat user to score the winner in an AFCON final. What a moment for the hosts, for caretaker manager(!) Emerse Faé - and, in all seriousness, for Haller, little over a year after winning his battle with cancer. In a tournament that certainly hasn’t been short of twists and turns, it’s perhaps the greatest narrative of all that’s triumphed.
