Experienced central midfielder, former Macc captain signs on a two year deal.
I was right again with my comments in the rumour mill 😉

Looks a cracking signing. Described as "technically out of this world" and "a ball playing organiser" by Cook when he signed him for Barrow last summer.

Bloody hell .....another one of Macc's players? He was at Macclesfield 2013-16, and their captain during some of that period. He has been at Barrow this season, and Barrow actually extended his contract a few weeks ago, so its odd they have then let him go. Their fans are very complimentary of him, so if he is rated by a promotion chasing side like Barrow; then that is a top top signing for us!! He's been described as one of the most technically gifted players they have seen, and his experience will be crucial. Replacement for George and our new captain? I hope so!! He's also apparently know as a leader and organiser which is EXACTLY what we have been dying fr, for a while now. Also, yet again we sign someone who was contracted at another club and not released, which sends a good message. I'd recommend everyone goes and has a look at Paul's goal at Dartford away for Macclesfield, one of the best goals I've seen. Wow.

Welcome Paul! We do seem to have fundamentally changed our approach for this coming season. Previously, we'd virtually only sign up and coming youngsters with a view to improving them and selling them on. The signings of Hannah, McCombe and Turnbull are the polar opposite of this. Not saying it's a bad thing. We need to balance experience and youth, but it's definitely a change of plan.

Great signing, really pleased to have filled that midfield void with a top player, not just someone to make up numbers. I wonder who will partner him in there?! I'd like to think Shaw, but can't see it given Shaw's new role.

This is a superb signing if he can stay injury free. He has the experience and looks like a leader on the pitch, just what we need. I'm starting to feel really optimistic for next season now, and I think Macca is learning from his mistakes. Last season we had an inexperienced, young squad but now we have got a nice experienced squad coming together. Welcome to Chester FC Paul! 🔵⚪️

Looked like it was from the Elliot Durrell school of marking your man.

Apparently he provides quality from set pieces which has been lacking. Needs to keep fit as the squad will be stretched at times. Saying that Shaw isn't a bad 4th choice midfielder to help out when needed. These signings all show that Macca is the right man for the job and can do the recruitment/salesman side of the role. He is obviously a very talented coach and has proved with a very impressive half a season that he can motivate and prepare a team to be successful at this level. Everyone needs to give him the backing he deserves by turning up and SUPPORTING the team during August and September. Let's build some momentum and realise our potential this season.

Barrow wanted to keep Paul however he informed Cox he wanted to move closer to his family in Cheshire and when Chester came in for him he wanted to join

Hannah and Turnbull are also good at set pieces which we were terrible at last season.

Sounds like, if fit, he will be a really decent signing - a leader and a player with a high level of ability. However, he sounds injury-prone and with a small squad and a 2-year deal he could prove a real gamble. These 2 year contracts are making me distinctly uncomfortable, although I understand the logic.

I agree, but i think the 2 year deals are the only reason Ross and Paul have signed for us over other options. I hope he stays fit, lets face it, every fan is a little bitter when players leave so comments by them must be taken lightly until we see him play. At 28 he's a good age and a nice fit with his attributes. Barrow weren't a million miles away from playoffs, and would have made them if this seasons rules has applied with the 6 teams. So for us to have signed their regular central midfielder is a big step for us.

Let's hope we get value for money out of them and we can sign a squad with enough depth to compensate for any time they spend out.
