Bit of a drop for Joel to Step 5. Brummy, so closer to home.

Also a chance for him to get his game back together. Just looked lost last season. Put in a couple of stinking performances.
Good luck to the lad.

Hi folks, Hednesford Town fan here.
We were beneficiaries of a reprieve last season despite finishing in a relegation position so we remain at step 4 in the Northern Premier League, Division 1 West.
What can we expect from our new signing? He appears to be a good age and has had a good career so far looking at the clubs he has played for. Any comments positive or negative gratefully received…

The first time we had him he was probably the best fullback in the division - quick, good defensively, excellent going forward. He deservedly got a move to a higher division.
Everyone was really pleased when we re-signed him at the start of last season, but for some reason it just didn't work out for him. He was in and out of the side, and seemed to be a shadow of his former self - not out and out bad (though there were a couple of poor performances - which almost all players have), just lethargic, and like a 'light' version of his former self.
I'm sure most Chester fans would wish him all the best, and if he finds anything like his best form again with you he'll tear the place up for you.

We probably should have won the game at Scunthorpe, but he was at fault for both of their goals.

What can we expect from our new signing? He appears to be a good age and has had a good career so far looking at the clubs he has played for. Any comments positive or negative gratefully received… He looked like an EFL-standard player in his first spell here. Such an exciting, attacking fullback - great on the ball, able to glide past players, and with a wand of a left foot. Deservedly moved on to Chesterfield and then Notts County shortly afterwards, which shows just how highly-rated he was. Surprisingly returned to us last summer, in a move that was seen as a massive coup at the time, but it hasn’t worked out for him at all second time around - though to his credit, he did actually improve in the final few games of the season. Our current manager favours a different style to the managers who first brought Taylor to the club, and this system has benefitted him far less as it’s exposed his defensive frailties and afforded him less freedom to roam forward. His confidence seemed to fall to rock bottom, which further affected his performances, and he perhaps also suffered from a lack of sharpness from not having played many games in the previous couple of years. That being said, I’m very surprised that he’s dropped so low - I expected him to end up at a Step 3 side, or possibly even another Step 2 side. Perhaps he’s deliberately chosen to play at a lower level than he's capable of in an attempt to get his mojo back with less pressure on him; perhaps he’s simply realised the ship has sailed to get back into the full-time game and so now values a more stable environment, closer to home, over progression through the pyramid. There might even be some personal issues at play - who knows? Regardless, if his head’s in the right place, he should comfortably be the best fullback in your league - especially if you’re planning on playing attacking football. There have been a few rather vitriolic comments towards him from our fans, which I feel are totally harsh and unnecessary - I don’t believe him to be lazy, as some are claiming, or to have a bad attitude. He’s a good player who’s just had a poor season - I personally wish him nothing but the best, and really hope that he can arrest his rather rapid descent and begin to climb back up the leagues. As an aside, what’s happened to you guys in the last few years? I remember you being a pretty solid Step 3 outfit not that long ago, and assumed that was the level Taylor had gone to when I first saw the news - I was shocked to see that you’re not only now at Step 4, but have only just been reprieved from relegation to Step 5.

First time was a really good player. Made up when he came back but was a shadow of the first time we had him Made mistakes lost pace poor distribution defensively poor.
Really depends on which version you get

Wish him all the best hopefully he climbs back up the leagues we all know how good he is on his day

If he's played as an attacking wingback he should look a class act in step 4. He's far better doing that than defending as part of a solid back four. There always seemed a big gap between him and the left sided centre half.

Despite his natural ability, he just seemed to have lost it, and there were some games where he just put zero effort in.

He was ok with us last season, but his career is very much in a downward trajectory, I suppose he has to find his right level but it’s clearly not NL step 6 or above..

There always seemed a big gap between him and the left sided centre half. That’s cos he couldn’t ever be arsed to track back (or even run - can’t ever remember seeing him do more than jog last season…first season with us he was like greased lightening)! Was amazed that Cal stuck with him for as long as he did. No idea why when others were cut far faster by Cal.

You must be talking about a different player as Joel Taylor was truly awful, a pale shadow of his former self unfortunately

He was pretty poor last season. Played like someone who knew he'd dropped a level but didn't have the appetite to get back to a higher level. Shame, cos on his day he's a really good full back but he looked like a man who'd fallen out of love with the game, and it just hasn't worked out for him coming back. Probably done the right thing to drop again and rebuild his confidence.

Long story, but basically we had new owners in early 2020 who then blamed Covid for severely disrupting their plans and their income from other businesses. Partly true of course but it was also felt by some that they thought it was going to be easier and cheaper than it actually was to run a football club. They announced their intentions to sell, we had a new buyer but something went wrong at the last minute. We did, 12 months ago, announce our intention to resign from the NPL, until one of those owners decided to “save” the club and fund it for a further season. And whilst that happened, we were only signing players from lower levels who weren’t good enough which is why we would have been relegated twice in the last two seasons but for the reprieve. We have new owners now though who came in early 2024 with big plans of climbing back up the pyramid so we’ll have to wait and see.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like we need to get his head right then, or hope that it’s already right. The quality is apparent from the replies, hopefully we can get the attitude right.

Looks like Hednesford mean business, they've now appointed Steve King as manager (notoriously follows the money) and signed Dom McHale as well.
Taylor is actually probably earning quite well out of this.
