Club Statement
Groundsman Mike Barrow will depart the club at the end of July to take up a new opportunity at a Premier League side.
A boyhood Chester supporter, ‘Baz’ has worked tirelessly in his role since his appointment in 2015 – consistently producing high-quality pitches season after season and defying treacherous weather to keep match postponements down to a minimum.
Mike moves on with our best wishes as he pursues an exciting opportunity higher up the footballing pyramid, with his last game as Groundsman set to be against Altrincham on Saturday 27th July at the Deva.
The club will be advertising for the role in due course.
Vice-Chair Jim Green said: "On behalf of everyone at Chester FC, we would like to thank Mike for the outstanding dedication and service he has given over the past nine years.
"The playing surface at the Deva is regarded among the best in non-league football, which is down to Mike's expertise and hard work.
"He is a loyal Chester fan and I know how much pride he took in working for his club, but he has been presented with a tremendous opportunity to further his career.
"Mike is a hugely popular figure around the club and we will miss him, but I'm sure he's looking forward to returning to the stands with his family and supporting the team."
Thank you and all the very best, Baz!

😔 our playing surface has always been tip top - even on meagre funds. This is a real shame. Hope the clubs finds someone who can keep up the good work.

Made up for him. Always produced a top quality surface that allows us to play our quick paced, free flowing football.
Anyone know what type of fee we'll demand? Surely had him on a long term contract. Reasonably young as far as groundsmen go, still plenty of potential to grow.

Don’t think anyone is paying fee for a groundsman Rare clubs pay transfer fees for players at this level never mind

I think there's a bit more to it than cutting grass. You are joking me!!! I’m sure there is. Genuine question though, what makes it a full time job? After mowing the grass and turning on the sprinklers what else is there to do? Remember: Genuine question!!

You're right, nothing. That's why every Sunday league football pitch and every garden in the country that just gets it's grass cut once a week and gets rained on now and then is like a carpet.

Is this how it works on here? I’m asking what he does because I’m interested to know. It’s obviously a full time job I just wondered what it entails.

Have looked at job description and it says to keep the landscape around the ground presentable to visitors. Don't know who was doing it but outside the ground at the corner of Harry Mac stand and the West (now Mike Metcalf stand) grass cuttings were regularly tipped at that corner. It became a stinking rotten mess. Didn't present the club as professional and was not nice to walk past. Our pitch was though mostly immaculate. Sad to see him go a great supporter of Chester.

Best of luck to Mike. He's done a really good job over the years. Must be good career move for him.
If he's gone to Everton might he actually end up working on Southport's pitch for their u21s? Be ironic wouldn't it?

If a groundsman is under contract at one club and talks to another club about being their groundsman, is that grounds for dismissal? Sorry. I didn't think this thread was shit enough.

Really made up for Baz as he thoroughly deserves this opportunity, although at the same time I’m gutted to see him leave us. I’ll be rooting for him to do well in his next role for sure.

Made up for him. Always produced a top quality surface that allows us to play our quick paced, free flowing football. Anyone know what type of fee we'll demand? Surely had him on a long term contract. Reasonably young as far as groundsmen go, still plenty of potential to grow. No transfer fee but maybe there will be a sell on fee if he gets snapped up by one of the bigger European clubs?
