Besides, 'City' is still a main terrace chant so whats the problem?

It coincided with the worst period of the Blues' history. It's good enough to hear the fans shouting "Come on City." Leave it like that and stop reviving bad memories!

Great question to start a thread. Some early aggression from the usual suspects, but a significant point raised surely. I've just looked on google for information and am surprised to find that when the club was Chester City FC it had the nicknames Blues and Seals(but not City). Since 2010 when the name dropped the City component the nicknames are now listed as Blues, Seals, and City. No logic there, so how accurate is the Google info. Assistance from older fans please - what were the nicknames pre 1983 when the club was just Chester FC? I don't recall City being used, but it was many years ago.

If the original post had posed the question whether there was any appetite for bringing back City into the name then this is a perfectly legitimate discussion point. However the question was WHEN was the club going to be renamed which would presume an inevitability which is of course nonsense. My view is that Chester FC is just fine.

The former guise of the club is now synonymous with catastrophe and controversy. Bringing the CITY moniker back in the short term would potentially cause reputational damage due to the association with previous failed regime(s). CHESTER FC was fine in 1970s and it’s perfectly fine now. You have to wonder sometimes what the agenda of certain "fans" is in even raising this as a discussion point.

Some fans find it harder than others to let go of the past and embrace what we have now, which is fair enough I think, although there is a certain tone to the way they present their arguments that I think can be a bit hostile and unnecessary.
I'd be against bringing City back into the name, because I see this as a new chapter for the club and we should treat it as such. To go back to Chester City would almost be denying what happened to the old club, and would be a bit insulting to the people involved in the set-up and immediate success of Chester FC, and perhaps it would be more respectful to Chester City to keep that as a finite chapter in the club's history.
Also, personally I've never been that fond of 'Chester City' as a name anyway. We all know it's a city, there are plenty of other teams called City out there, and it's not like there's another major Chester team we need to distinguish ourselves from. Chester FC is just a better name I think - neater and more authentic. 'City' remains in the club's veins with the songs we chant and the name of the supporters' club City Fans United, and that's good enough for me.

I think opinions on the 'City' moniker may depend on when you began watching the blues, with those who started watching between 1983 and the CCFC winding up being more attached to that name. However, for most of the clubs history it was Chester FC. I don't think we should ever return to the title used during the era of Barnes, Smith, and Vaughan, far too much negativity is connected with that period. And it must be remembered that the original name change was controversial and divided the support base. One change I would like to lose is the phoenix club identifier, having ‘FC’ read out during the football results. It is both superfluous and irritating, obviously it’s Chester FC, it is the football results! Can"t use this site on my pc every time i try to post or edit i get default backend _ 404 ??

Yes, I also find the 'FC' part quite annoying during football results on TV and radio. Just makes the club sound quite amateurish/tin-pot compared with the rest of the teams. You never hear 'Arsenal FC', 'Chelsea FC', or 'Liverpool FC' so why should it be any different for us? (I can understand during Champions league etc... as a large number stick it at the beginning in their language, which is fair enough.) Just wish they'd call us Chester in domestic football.

I think the 'FC' has been tagged on to the end of our name in the media to stop reporters and commentators saying 'Chester City' out of habit. When we first got back into the Conference, the BBC and other sources kept calling us City, and I think our page on the BBC site even had the old club badge. A few fans wrote to them to point out the mistake, but even if it was changed to just 'Chester' a lot of reporters would automatically add the 'City'. The 'FC' is sort of a full stop, but yes it is a bit annoying.

I started going in the late sixties and for as long as I can remember the terrace chant was always, "City" rather than "Chester". In fact I can never remember "Come on Chester" being chanted, ever. "Seals" has never really resonated with me but I respect that for some it does. I personally wouldn't favour bringing back City to our name - I think we are fine back to where we more or less have been with Chester FC. I always liked the slight idiosyncrasy that we chant "City" without it being in our name.

James Alexander Gordon always insisted on 'AFC Bournemouth' when reading the classifieds... Never said Sunderland AFC though
