Less said about Rooney Vaughan Rainford the better...
Regarding the young lad. By all accounts a decent showing. Important not to get carried away, but I do like to see young lads play fearlessly when they get their chance.

No Hannah or Mahon again? Does anyone know if Mahon will ever be fit again? It's hard to trust JM when it comes to injuries as he's not honest and upfront about things. Mahon played the whole first half, but didn't have much joy. Lloyd Marsh Hughes looked a very good prospect.

First time I've seen us play this preseason. I know people will says it is just preseason but there was a marked improvement with the team we put out second half. We were pedestrian in the first, second half we played quick free kicks, throw-ins, tempo went up markedly for me in that second 45. I think McCarthy was trying out his perceived strongest side in that first half, it backfired for me. Second half the lads were just quicker and looked as though they had a point to prove. Bell did well first half I thought but he and Akintunde were too far apart a lot of the time to link up. Mahon and Chapell are too narrow for my liking when we are defending. I know managers like to compact the midfield but when we won the ball back we had no width. We conceded from a corner due to Turnbull and Halls arguing about who should be picking up at the near post - it was farcical. Second half much better, pick of the senior players being Dawson (one ball to Waters was a real eye catcher) & White but special mention has to go to Matty Waters & James Jones who were excellent and also Marsh-Hughes who not only took his goal well but played a great through ball for White to tuck home as well. Goalkeeper trialist was very vocal and looked fitter than Lynch. Two full back trialists were okay, wanted to get on with the game and were keen to try and impress but not sure if they were any better than what we have. Centre half trialist looked very average. Overall i'd say that's given Macca some food for thought, its all well and good playing the ball around and looking neat and tidy but if its done at a one pace its easy to defend against.

White is going to be integral to how we play this season. He's decent enough in the air and gets midfielders involved in attacks effectively. Him and Hannah are easily going to be our strongest partnership upfront and they've not played together yet.
1st half we just looked like we were carrying a few players in Mahon, Akintunde and Chapell. They just looked short of match sharpness.
Dawson in the second half showed his fantastic range of passing, was unlucky with the shot that hit the post. He's got two good feet and can put himself about abit. Huge potential there. Would like to see him play alongside Turnbull or James. See what he can do when he's not childminding Wade Joyce.
Lloyd Marsh-Hughes looks promising, for a 16 year old physically he's built well already and he took his goal and assisted Whites fantastically. A well chosen loan move to a team that plays football like Witton would do no harm.

3-1 full time. It's great to see the Youth/trialists get us the win in the second half, which is really promising along with maintaining our unbeaten pre-season. I do know it's only pre-season, but it looks like we have a player in our hands in Harry White, with him netting another goal for us. He seems really good. Good result tonight, with another test tomorrow evening away at Alty! COYB. I think you read too much into pre-season games Rio. Only time will tell whether 'we have a player on our hands' and we can judge him when we are playing better opposition and when the tackles are going in. I hope White does turn out to be a good signing but we have seen many players look good in pre season warm ups and fail to make the grade when the serious stuff starts.

Jamie Hand being a good example. I remember him looking like someone we could build a team around in his first few friendlies. He turned out to be a candidate for a Worst Ever Chester XI. I'd agree that we shouldn't read too much into them. Fine to enjoy them and form early views of players, but important not to get too excited or despondent. They're just practice games and the results aren't important - in fact it can do you good to lose one or two and learn from your mistakes.

Jordan Chappell another good example. Looked pacey and dangerous in his first pre-season with us. Never fulfilled that promise. His disinclination to tackle led indirectly to the corner from which Bala scored last night.

I remember seeing Sam Hughes in a preseason friendly a couple of years ago and thinking he looked like a very good prospect. Nothing wrong in being optimistic about some youth team players.

Mahon played the first half. Missed that - good spot. Let's hope it's not the latest failed comeback. We desperately need him fit and firing. Mahon came through the first half without any pain at all.
