Anyone watch the England women's game yesterday? There was a strange incident where the ref pointed to the spot for a Spain penalty, then seemed to change her mind and gave a drop ball. It sounds like one of the England players managed to talk her out of awarding it.She has a point that it wasn't a "deliberate handball" as such, but it was pretty clumsy. If it's not a penalty then it makes me think that handball offences should actually be very rare.

Very odd decision but i'm sure in the eyes of the law her hand/arm was in such position that a penalty should have been awarded. Majority of the time pens shouldn't be given when the arms are either by their side or behind their back.

As far as I am aware, a penalty or free kick should only be awarded where the perpetrator is seeking to gain an advantage by their action. The ball hitting the hand should not necessarily result in a penalty although they are often given

It certainly wasnt deliberate handball anyone falling over splays their arms out naturally

Perhaps not a penalty then, but I think she's lucky to get away with it. It's not exactly a freak deflection, just a bad piece of defending - she slips over and shins it into her own arm.

I didn't see the penalty incident, but a word for a women. They are definitely a better bet than the men for their likelihood of winning sporting tournaments. Well done the women for lifting the cricket World Cup for the 4th time.

Watched the game last night, saw the incident and surprised ref overturned it.
If that happens against us at the Deva the crowd would lose it and there'd be multiple threads on both DCs. I've seen pens given for a lot less

Well done the women for lifting the cricket World Cup for the 4th time. They get on with the game a lot better as well. Nowhere near as much rolling about and trying to con the ref. I'm not one for gender stereotyping, but a lot of men could be turning to the women for guidance on how to approach what is a physical, contact sport.

You'd like refs to get the decision correct first time round, but I quite like the fact that the ref realised that she'd made a mistake.
There was no way you could ever say that it was deliberate as it deflected up off her body, not like when a defender blocks a cross with his/her arms held aloft.
