I've just read that Neymar is going to be sold to PSG for a reported £196 million. How can this be sustainable?
With the bonkers price tags for distinctly average Premier League players like Walker etc surely it is only a matter of time before the bubble bursts and fans get out priced from watching their team.

Er... many fans have been priced out for years.

Football sold it's soul to the devil years ago. impossible to follow a prem club unless you have a very fat wallet. Even football at our level is pricing the the casual fan away from watching football. £18 for a matchday admission is common in the conference. Football will never go 'pop' by the way,,,,well not in the prem it won't. It's the clubs in L2/Conf Prem and lower who will go bust in the end because the money in the top of the game no longer filters down to the smaller clubs

You can watch the prem cheap,in fact cheaper than wrexham or chester,Wba will offer tickets at 20.00 pound for adult 2 pound for junior if the game is live,Blackburn and Bolton when both in the prem had some fantastic offers 5 years ago i went to Blackburn v Norwich and Blackburn v Wigan for 24 pound both games with my son,if anybody on here wants to take his son or daughter look at the live games and clubs like WBA which is only down the road have great offers, thd top clubs are a complete and utter rip off.

The simple fact is, its TV money and sponsorship that is killing football. The money generated from those streams mean that premier league teams can let the fans in for free and still make a fat profit. The price of an away ticket at a premier league game is now capped at £30. As previously stated above, its the teams further down the pyramid that will ultimately suffer, that's why it is imperative we don't lose our ethos of a fans owned club run at a sustainable budget. Over the next five years there will be many many more stories of Stockport County, Leyton Orient and Chester City, we must make sure we are not another statistic( again)

Even in 5 years prices of football have changed a hell of a lot, so has the money being spent by clubs. Man City did a £20 an adult game for their European home games which i thought was good this season. I think football is just about hanging onto it's status of being a working mans game. In a few years time, i'd be surprised if the average ticket in our league is less than £20 an adult. Some clubs in the world can afford to charge fans less and take a hit themselves, ie Bayern Munich. This is a rarity though. It's a bit like everything though, prices are constantly inflating, at a quicker rate than wages. I always think if i can't afford something i won't do it, i'd hate to think football could one day become one of those things for me or any future generations.

My mates 15 year old son has just bought a season ticket for Wolves for £50.
Not bad at just over £2 a game.

Wouldn't go to a premier league game even if it was free- not interested in the ponced up prema Donnas - give me grass roots local football anyday so I do think the gap is widening but the quality footballers are slipping down to non league football so the standard we watch is improving - just look at Sutton and Lincoln last year-

Just think what those Prem stars would be worth if they could use both feet! I seem to see so many instances now where so called stars are totally one footed, for example, trying to scoop with the outside of their right foot rather than a far simpler shot with their left - Coutinho for one. I wish someone would compile a video of examples of players using their wrong foot. So common now that the highly paid pundits don't even comment any more. At least it's looking like retrospective action will be taken against those proven, via video review, to have gained by cheating. Interesting too to read Maradona claiming his "hand of God" goal wouldn't have stood with video review technology. Mind you, he also said England wouldn't have won the World Cup with a goal that didn't cross the line!!

Doesn't help sky charging like 25 quid a month on sky sports. That's how clubs are getting so much television money and paying more for players etc. When would you ever see Stoke in talks with Oxlade for 25m before the last season or two?
I don't even blame the players to be honest, I'm confident in saying they would be happy with their wage offers its te agents that drive most wages up for personal gain. Rooney was on £500 a week when he first played for Everton, albeit at 16....he's returned way past his best on 150k a week.

As alluded to before, the problem for the likes of us is that some clubs up the pyramid can afford to charge less for tickets as they gain income through TV deals. There are some genuinely decent deals that some teams are doing, like Wolves, as Bluecamp says. Makes it so much harder for us to attract floating fans.
My biggest gripe with the Premier League is it seems to have lost it's mystique. It bugs me that some billionaire could practically close his eyes, put his finger on a league table and turn any side into Champions if he throws enough money at it.

The Premier League is far more competitive than any of the top Leagues in the world. I'm not defending it but I'd rather have what we have right now than a league dominated by 1 team (Italy, Germany, France), maybe 2 (Spain). For me the Prem is sports entertainment, I keep up to date by watching MOTD and that's pretty much it. Get my football from Chester FC and watching other non league clubs

To answer the question of how it's sustainable, PSG are more or less owned by the state of Qatar - the wealthiest nation on the planet. The state-owned Qatar Investment Authority has a net worth of $335bn. PSG's owners Qatar Sports Investments are not officially anything to do with QIA, but in reality I think that's debatable, and the PSG president is also president of Al Jazeera Sports, which again is owned by the state.
In short, £196m is loose change to them. They've probably made that in the time it's taken you to read this post.

This is slightly off topic but I went to see Salford v Bury tonight I was going to watch Tranmere v Fleetwood with a Tranmere mate but found out this afternoon they wanted to charge me £2 extra to pay on the gate because I hadn't bought a ticket in advance a bit of a cheek imo for a friendly, anyway Salford got beat 2-1 but a very entertaining game and a Salford team that would more than hold there own in our league it was interesting to see how much money has been spent there, not sure how much all the ex players have put in but it's certainly a impressive set up there now .

Cue the latest £50m signing proclaiming, "It was always my dream to play for Man City!" I'm sure fans of those sides won't complain, but for all the glitzy signings and sparkling stadiums in the Premier League, I think it's lost a bit of its soul.

It's a strange one, i totally see where you're coming from regards money exchanged but that is purely down to income of clubs these days, making it harder for your typical lower league clubs like us. That said, i think 9/10 people on here would admit to being slightly sucked in by the Leicester City fairytale a year ago, which proved money isnt everything. Then they spend 32m on Slimani a player that can't score PL goals and became another one of those clubs. It would seem theyre investing in youth though, Sam Hughes one of a number of signings.

Totally agree, there are definitely exceptions to the rule. The kids at Man U... Arsenal won leagues against the odds... but I agree with you, Leicester was incredible! I think most people wanted them to win for exactly the reason I explained in my last email - they were the underdogs up against the mega rich clubs: relying on the camaradarie a smaller, tightly-knit squad brings; maximising their talent and using Ranieri's nous.

Why do intelligent people(referees) seemingly get conned by the cheats? Must be something going on behind the scenes. Unfortunately it filters downwards. More " gamesmanship" at level 5 than level 8, but mostly still relatively low compared with the top leagues.

Most of the time we have 3-5 replays of an incident in slow motion to find a decision and often the pundits are still split in their thoughts. Until video replays come in, to help the referees, followed by retrospective bans for those found guilty of diving, it will continue to happen. Refs though, can't be blamed.
