I posted this on the other side, and I thought it may be worth putting here in case anyone else watched or was at the meeting...
Watched Jon McCarthy on the webcast from CFU members meeting last night. It was an excellent presentation on how the squad has been put together, and how they have prepared for pre-season. I was very impressed at the level of detail and the work that he and his team obviously do, and the tools and methods they use to educate the players. It came across that he is passionate and cares about our football club, and that his focus was solely on building toward Saturday as being the start of our season.
Very impressed, and was left thinking that we were getting value for our hard earned, and that any success would be due to this. Good luck to him and his staff for the season. COYB

No doubt Jon is very passionate and methodical. Just hope he can turn all the hard work into results. Some times managers just don't seem to be able to do that and the jury is still out on him. After last season he's got to hit the ground running or he's in for a tough time. I'd say he's got about a quarter of an hour at Solihull.

It's very true that he puts the hours in (and more!) with regards to his preparation - he's a very studious manager. That's never been questioned. It's his silly comments in press interviews that wind us up so if he could just get some form of media training I don't think he'd get half the stick he does.

Sorry, yes, should have flagged that up for Richard....he does tend to take things literally and go off on one. For his benefit: I was trying to make the point that some of our fans are a little too impatient and given what happened last year will no doubt be on his back much more quickly than you would expect for a new manager.

I watched the streaming service of last nights CFU meeting and was equally impressed by Macca's presentation. The insight into all the behind the scenes work was fascinating. He went out of his way to comment on how important the support of fans were in the success on the field. So let's get behind him and the team and enjoy the ride!!!!

COYB Agree with everything you say. When you have been in his company, you can't fail to be impressed by his passion, commitment, knowledge, level of detail and hard work . However it remains to be seen whether he can put it all into practice on match day.

A quarter of an hour!! Ridiculous statement. Good luck to the team for the whole season. Satire not your strong point Richard ? Blindly following McCarthy and having total contempt for anyone who doesn't do likewise seems to be his only strong point ! Sad to read in a forum of opinion the use of the word "ridiculous" to describe what someone else says, and that's before one considers the original statement may well have been a joke. If only football results were determined on paper, and in the rhetoric spouted at such presentations we'd be in for promotion. Let's see how the season pans out on the field and let that be the only worthwhile judge of the manager. Based on the preceding home play of 2017 I fully see the humour in the quarter of an hour statement.

He'd be the perfect manager if he was a) not as tactically naive and b) avoided getting so defensive and accept responsibility. I sincerely hope he manages to work on those two aspects as other than that he ticks all the boxes for a club like us.

He's a good man, who works hard, nobody has ever doubted that despite our second half of the season. He seems to have worked hard on his interview technique the last fortnight, which is great for everybody.
At the end of the day football is a results business, i couldn't care all that much that we've hired a nice bloke if we don't win in the first 10 games. If he can get things right on the pitch, and i believe he can if he sticks to his 4-4-2 formation that actually worked for him the first half of last, then he won;t go far wrong. I already fully support his work off the pitch, but it's what he does on it that matters to the fans most.

Jon gave a detailed insight into all the work that has been put into the preparation for the new season, and what impressed me most was the way the footballing management has become much more professional, progress which if continued and developed further can only be a positive. Whether this will result in a degree of success on the field to the extent that will satisfy the majority on the terraces remains to be seen. It would be a shame if results were so poor that a change in management became inevitable as there would be a risk that the ethics being put in place could be lost under a new regime. For all his hard work, not withstanding his at times very poor media performances, I think that Jon deserves some success. He obviously is passionate about what he does for our club. Imagine standing up at Wembley and chanting "Jon McCarthy's Blue and White Army!!" It's nice to dream!!

I already fully support his work off the pitch, but it's what he does on it that matters to the fans most. He emphasised the intent to play 4-4-2. Made it clear that he only played one upfront last season due to lack of fit, in form strikers. Tried Durrell but that didn't work. He's resolved that problem this season by having 4 strikers. That means he can freshen the side and bring on attacking substitutes. Didn't really have that option last season. It appeared that we resisted bringing in more players late last season to keep money for this one. Not sure many managers would have been ok with that. He was asked about the press statements. He tried to explain that he will protect his players at all times, and doesn't want to give them any excuses for not performing in any game. He went out of his way to say how important the crowd support can be. We can be the 12th man. It really lifts the players having us get behind them. He also said it affects the younger players (especially) when the crowd have a go at them. Then they don't do the things they should. There was a good comment from him about the crowd heckling. When we're playing badly and the crowd shout "come on, get it sorted out", he said don't you think I can't see it too. That's what I'm thinking. I'm sometimes thinking I sorted this 8 weeks ago in training. Why aren't they doing that now. He really does come across that he gets our club (his words). He tries to get value for money in everything we do. It sounds far more professional than a number of other clubs seem to be at our level. Bear in mind if our improved budget is still bottom 4 to 6, we need to be. I really hope he gets it right and does well this season, as I suspect any replacement would actually put us back 2 or 3 years n our development.

He's right about the heckling...it's not rocket science that young players will be affected, even if it's not directed at them. It's much less of a problem at away games when the support is generally very good - even when we were getting tonked at Maidstone I didn't hear too much abuse (although probably deserved on that day). Everyone's entitled to have a moan when a pass is misplaced etc but it's often relentless - sometimes wonder if there should be more self policing by the fans to try and shout down the minority who seem to enjoy the barracking. Some of the abuse Alabi got last year was totally out of order - no wonder he was in such a hurry to leave. I wonder who the scapegoat will be this season? My 15-minute comment was tongue in cheek but I do think it's vital we get a decent start and don't concede early at Solihull or else it could set a very negative tone for the season.

There's an awful lot about JM that is really positive. He understands the club, our ethos and is determined to make gradual improvements to get us where we want to be. Give me that over a Steve Burr type manager who wants another player and then another one after that.
The big question marks for me are about his media handling. Even at a small club like ours, it's a huge part of his job. He's tended to alienate people in the past and it doesn't take much for any fanbase to turn. He really could help his cause a great deal by occassionally telling it like it is.

I do feel his winger options are lacking, but that's how it goes for small clubs. I think JM is the right man, I just hope he gets results as that's what matters.

Please credit EltonblueS off DevaChat 1, not me:
It was an informal meeting with JM as guest speaker, he lay out his vision for the coming season. He started by telling us how he gets the ethos of our club having spent 2 years in a role with the community trust, he also states that he believes the fans of this club are our biggest Asset. Since he has been at the club he says this is the best group of footie players we've ever had, his ethos this year is better players -which means a smaller squad -with the best players down the middle. He wants players to celebrate with fans and the fans to celebrate with the players "were all in together" he says, and anyone is welcome to come to the club and get involved, watch training etc. He wants his players to demonstrate discipline, high standards and respect. This season he's hoping to be able to strengthen in January and states we didn't have enough strikers last year. ...we will be playing 442 and he goes on to give an in depth talk about our tactics for the coming season Craig Mahon last year was a massive loss, but he is confident , better luck with injuries and we will do much better this year. Talks about how well the Academy players are doing, hoping to see one or two break through this season hoping to sign a new keeper this weekend. Players have there own team app, talks about sports science big on nutrition, hydration and science, gives us a talk on how to measure hydration and work out how much water a player needs to take on board during a game . he quotes " the key to success write down everything u need to do on that day and do it" ... he then states if he couldn't see us improving he wouldn't be here and goes on to say how confident he is about the coming season . He talks about Lawrence Kirby and how important his role is at the club, same with Mark Maguire and all the volunteers at the club, a lot of them there full time. We then go into a Q & A with him, someone asks why do all the players go back for corners, he says statistically when all the players come back for corners the team concede less goals. he answers various question before the whistle is blown for half time . Time for a quick pint, 2nd half Bryan Burns introduces three of the new directors who explain their rolls, Neil tells us about the new website, away commentary which will be FREE from now on, Doing our own website saved us at least 16 k (probably a lot more) he thanks MBNA for there part in helping put the site together Laurance tells us season tickets may be available from next Friday the club may open Sunday to allow tickets to be collected , season ticket sales was 1090 income 200 k Cestrian 10 yet to be launched and this offer will be added to the total for season ticket income. Bryan states how hard working and passionate our manager is, gives us a talk on where we are up to with the proposed disabled seating area. Good turnout good meeting
