I will be the first to admit I didn't go today, despite having a season ticket, and having been to the first two home games. Living where I do, it's 8 hours out of a Saturday to get to a home match and back, which on this occasion I just didn't fancy.
So, I will bow to the opinion of those who did turn up re today's performance. However, my point has to be that it must be time for the manager to go now. A few things. Firstly, we have a home record going back to before Christmas that I don't believe any other club would put up with. Allied to that, the manager has clearly disenfranchised a sizeable section of the fan base; 1,670 at this stage in the season on a Saturday is disastrous for a fan-owned club such as ourselves. Take away the season ticket holders (a great effort to sell c.1,100, apparently), those who came from Sutton, and the number of 'floating' supporters who turned up today must have been pitifully small. We have never been particularly well supported, but it's clear that a good 500 or so semi-regulars have turned their back on us, and this won't change unless and until McCarthy puts together a sustained run of positive and winning home performances - which seems as far away as ever. A number of people have clearly thought 'that's it', and won't bother coming again until there's a change.
Most crucially, though, the manager denies the fan base the hope we need to make it worthwhile supporting a non league club. We have to believe it's feasible to get back into the league at some point, rather than simply hang on in the National League. That might be very difficult, but setting the team up to be as defensive as we are (the Halifax game was as poor an 'effort' at home as I've seen in a while), never acknowledging the concerns of supporters re the poor performances, and appearing to aim just for survival won't cut it, I'm afraid. I, for one, would rather have a go and lose, than die wondering all the time; at the end of the day, I would actually like to be entertained.
From the commentary, today was something of a microcosm of all that. We go two down, admittedly against what I expect to be one of the better sides in our league this year, having played pretty negatively. With nothing to lose we have a good go, get back in it, but then withdraw again and - guess what - yet again we concede and lose right at the death. This is the pattern of the last 8 months at home now.
I suppose the question is - at what point do we take the decision to sack him? A sub 1,000 crowd on a cold night? A year without a home win? Adrift at the bottom of the table? Hopefully none of those things will happen, but the current trajectory points that way. I for one would pay him off now (mitigate the contract, for crying out loud), and try something else - the definition of madness is repeating the same thing again and again and expecting a different result.
Oh, and I like the guy, btw.

If you had posted this at half time I would have seconded your opinion but I thought the performance in the 2nd half was excellent. The tactics were clearly changed and both full backs got forward on numerous occasions. Akintunde was a real handful for their defence, he scared them every time he was chasing a ball and on several occasions when we broke we were cynically fouled. A couple of the Sutton players could have gone. Maohon had his best game for a long while and his goal, which was very well taken, gave him confidence, he was unplayable in the 2nd half and his distribution was excellent. That 2nd half gave me hope, their 3rd goal was a kick in the teeth, we didn't deserve to lose and Sutton really didn't deserve to win.

We have good players, unfortunately a clown of a manager who's tactically clueless. It's so obvious to everyone watching the key is to get the full backs forward, spread the game and use the width of the pitch, if I can see it then why the he'll can a guy on 50k a year not see it??

The board and mark maguire have obviously been brain washed by him. Or McCarthy has some dirt on someone at the club that they don't want making public knowledge. They are the only reasons I can think of why he is still in a job.

It seemed like the linesman gave it as an offside, claiming their centre half touched it on its way in. That fitted with the response from their players.

What is really frustrating me is the way we are setting up, its like we are setting up in each game to try and just nullify the opposition and concentrate on stopping them and not losing rather than playing our own game and going out to win games. When we get the ball down and play we actually look good. But tactically we seem far more concerned with stopping the opposition rather than playing our own game

Hey Tarvin, I never said anything about McCarthy in that last post. I think his tactics are shocking, boring, negative and long term doomed to failure. Just trying to get across that this team can play and probably do very well with different tactics/different manager.

I heard it on the dee 106.3 match report, it said the officials gave an indirect freekick and it went straight in, but they could have been wrong, we were sat directly behind it and it did go straight in without anyone touching it

It was given for a trip on the touchline. Direct free kick. I think their number 9 was in an offside position, didn't interfere, but the ref obviously thought he touched it despite the ball going straight on.

Got to say it but I have always believed we need to give JM time to sort things out but the time has now come for him to go. How long is this abysmal run going to be allowed to continue we need to dip into the rainy day fund and sort it out because its beginning to PISS down

He can go for me. Spends far too much time over analysing the opposition. Football is a simple game. There's no lack of desire and effort from our players but at times they seem confused about what they're supposed to do or where they are supposed to be. And don't get me started on defending corners. Supposedly stats prove a team that brings all its players back to defend scores more on the break. How the fuck can you score on the break when your striker volleys the ball 70 yards to nobody. I think today's second half performance was in spite of the manager rather than any genius on his part.

seems the team went behind his back and gave it a go in the 2nd half i can accept that manner in fighting back and going down by the odd goal however first half was a disgrace sooner he goes the better

Sack the clown. Attendances will just get worse and worse with that dribble. No win in 18 home games! What a complete joke!

I'm scared ..... I'm scared that to sack JMc will cost a fortune. I'm scared that if we don't our home "crowds" will be around the 1000 mark on a cold wet night in February...which will not sustain the club in its current guise. Not an easy choice.....

I'm scared that if we don't our home "crowds" will be around the 1000 mark on a cold wet night in February...which will not sustain the club in its current guise. Not an easy choice..... None of us know the terms of the contract he signed. I can only hope there are some performance clauses in there that can be activated. However, even if there aren't, the board have to weigh up the facts. If we have 1,600 there on a Saturday in August, how many will be there in October, nevermind February? The financial loss of regular crowds of 1,000-1,300 will surely outweigh the cost of getting rid of him. If the club get rid, a new manager will have a long run at rebuilding our football club on the pitch, as well as the relationship with the fans. McCarthy will never win that back. Someone turning it round, with a decent run in the FA Cup, and we could start to reclaim money lost. In fact, with the way things are, financially it is absolutely imperative that we have a run in the cup to make up for budget shortfalls. Can we trust McCarthy with that, considering our last two attempts at winning an FA Cup game under his guidance? No one surely thinks that he will miraculously turn this around? What we are seeing now is exactly what we have seen since last December, just with a new and much better squad of players. He can talk the talk, but the results are what counts. Less than a point a game over a 6 month period of competitive football can surely only result in one outcome? Let's hope if and when the change does happen that the board learn some valuable lessons. To put ourselves in this situation again, after being in exactly the same position with Burr, is madness.

If the season started in January, that would read no wins in 18 home games. That's almost a full season of home games without winning... disgraceful.

Yes, for me. I think we need a fresh start. The Burr/McCarthy reign, despite some good moments with both, hasn't really worked out and has only served to dissipate much of the positive mood around the club, and seen it move away from its ethos.
Usually when a manager is struggling, you can argue that his players aren't helping, but today it felt like that defeat was pretty much entirely McCarthy's fault, especially with his awful approach to the first half. Second half he either decided to address the bleeding obvious or the players took it upon themselves to do so, but he still couldn't resist reverting to Plan A for the closing minutes and encouraging the team to sit back. And like I said on the other thread, if you consider a point at home to Sutton United to be worth clinging onto for dear life, especially at this stage of the season, you're not going to get anywhere.
Don't like to see a man lose his job and it's not great publicity to sack a manager four games, but I really do think it needs to be done now. The longer we leave it, the messier and nastier it's going to get.

Thought we were poor today. So negative and inviting pressure on ourselves. 0-2 and we got a goal out of nothing by mahon which he took well. Second half we were still sitting back but started to pass the ball and making good switches from either flank and had a go at them. Which is what we all wanted to see from the first whistle especially being the home team. With the goal by mahon our tales were up and the fans got behind the lads and we started to play some good stuff. We got back on level terms and I was thinking right come on these are here for the taking now and hopefully we can get the winner. Same old Chester were happy to get a point and went back to sitting back and AGAIN inviting pressure which led to their winner. With the spell where we scored our two goals why can't we be like that all game?? Playing for a point at home is shocking doesn't matter what team your playing. People were like Sutton are a really good team...No they just looked good because we made them look good. They were nothing special and I personally think we could of got a win today if we pushed hard at the end. Ross Hannah was a blow going off but thought Akintunde had a great game on his own up top. Ran after every ball and turned them defenders a few times. I knew Hannah would get injured again. He hasn't had a pre season and McCarthy just throws him right into the mix. You can't do that, he should of gradually eased him back into the team not just throwing him straight in.

Another one here who really likes Jon, but unfortunately reading DC here tonight (and Facebook, Twitter etc bored waiting for a plane) it would appear that the managers position has become difficult, bordering on untenable.
The post match pressers are becoming more and more uncomfortable and more like those at the end of last season with painful echoes of the Bob Grey "all we need is a good cup run" mantra.
Im sure every CFC fan wanted and hoped for JMc to do better, but with plummeting gates and a large budget to fund, I cannot see the elected board giving him too much longer. They are supporters who will see and feel the opinions of other supporters, but above all they are elected as being responsible for the security and future of our club.
Very disappointing really, as when he signed his new deal it really felt like he was the perfet fit. Just hasnt worked out I guess.
